So I just found out my dr doesn't require a pre-op liquid diet. Just eat light for 3 days before surgery. Then day before surgery a light Breakfast and then Clear Liquids rest if the day and nothing after midnight. I'm happy I don't have to do a long liquid diet but am also concerned since I see so many people on here are required to do so. Any one ever hear of not doing the diet?

My surgeon had no special diet. I was just to not eating anything or drink anything after midnight. My surgery went great and I am 10 weeks out and doing wonderful. Personally I am very happy I didn't have to do a liquid diet. I would have failed for sure.. Just remember every surgeon is different and every program is different. Have faith in your surgeon and his program..

I did not have to do a liquid diet, I was only asked not to eat anything after 10pm the day before surgery. I had light meals the day before anyway cause I thought it would help, I had Cereal for breakfast, chicken and vegetable Soup for lunch and some tuna for dinner. I will be 4 weeks on monday and had no complications, just feeling great and better every day!

Awww man, I failed and totally ate a few bites of chicken and a couple of shrimp. I was doing great, and hadn't eaten anything for 7 days but caved. My will power just went away. I am starving now. It is really hard to cook for everyone and not be able to eat anything. The liquid diet sucks, but feeling like a failure because I ate some food feels even worse. Ugh :-(

Well at least you caved on Protein. If you have to cheat that is a great cheat.... Not a failure just very difficult to be on liquid diet with a normal size tummy

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
