Anyone dealing with Runner's Knee/Chondromalacia?

Recommended Posts

My knees went out last July. After months of suffering with it and not being able to go up stairs, I went to the doc and was diagnosed with Grade 4 Chondromalacia (Runner's Knee or patellofemoral syndrome). I don't run. I got it from being overweight, stairs at work, and lifting my father who I cared for at home. squatting and lifting were the main culprits according to my doc. Is anyone else battling this? I'm on Celebrex (which is useless), tried PT and a chiropractor. I'm really frustrated because it is keeping me from working out like I want. I'm hoping that after surgery when the weight drops it will get much better, but I'm scared because I know the damage is already done. You should have seen my MRI ????

Anyway, I'm hoping to hear that some of you had this prior to surgery and have been relieved of the pain (at least a little) after weight loss. I don't want to have knee surgery....

I have considerably less knee and hip pain now. I do have some but it is more tolerable. I do not take pain meds. I take Joint juice and Tumeric both reportedly helpful in reducing joint inflammation. My surgery was 2/20 and I've lost 40 pounds. I walk 2 plus miles 5-6 days a week. I do notice a difference in pain ratio with more weight loss.

I do work comp insurance, and I see people find out they have chondromalacia all the time. The doc always suggests weight loss will help, but ultimately the need an arthroscopic procedure you just go in there and clean it up. A lot of people seem to find relief with that surgery because it is not like a meniscus or acl repair.

That is what I figured. I'm an assistant principal, so I'm going to give myself a couple of months after surgery to see how much pain relief I get, and if its not enough I'll get it scoped over Christmas break. I really, really want to run. It was so bad last night that is hurt with every step and even when I was laying down. Not fun. :(

Yeah. I am hoping weight loss will help me with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.

Try a tens unit! I used to have back pain and this was the only thing that helped! If your not familiar with it I recommend google it, they. An explain it better thAn me. Plus Celebrex is NSAID isn't it? My doc said not to take those because of the stomach irritation.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
