Has anyone had weight loss surgery after having a complete thyroidectomy? If so, did they have any issues with weight loss?

I had my thyroidectomy 24 years ago and my RNY last year. When i had my thyroidectomy I did not lose weight at all. Once I developed a thyroid problem that is when I started having issues with my weight. I never had a weight problem until I was about 25-26 and gained weight overnight.

Very interesting question. I have hypothyroid and my loss is very slow. I take synthroid, and fight for every lb.

I'm 163 and my goal weight is 150. My weight loss is slow, I'm 1 yr post op on April 9th. I was 216 on surgery day. I take a natural thyroid hormone called Armour Thyroid that works best for me rather than the synthetic. As the person above said and she is so right "you fight for ever pound"

You are 10000% right... I fight for every pound as well. I am on Armour Thyroid, I like it much better than the synthroid, its all natural.

That was another issue that I was having...I read that Armour thyroid meds work better than the levothyroxine but the 2 previous endocrinologist that I had refused to prescribe it for me...

So as far as "fighting for every pound" statement, did you find that you had to workout harder? Was it something with your diet that you had to change? I just want to be prepared.

I had a total thyroidectomy in 2004 after having thyroid cancer. I have been on synthroid since and it was the first question that I asked my doc before I even considered surgery. He told me that they were safe and small enough to take after surgery however, I was very worried about them being absorbed properly. I take my faithfully every night and I break them up with my front teeth and wash the bits down with a sip of Water. I have read that if you do this or dissolve them in water they will absorb better and I don't want to take any chances. I am 16 days post op and I have lost 18lbs. So, I think my weight loss is probably average. I however am going to make sure that I keep a close eye on my TSH in the coming weeks and months to make sure it stays where it needs to be.

Congrats on beating cancer! I'm hypothyroid and at my three month check up my doctor has lowered my thyroid medicine from 100 mcg to 88 mcg. I was always told by my doctor that exercise is key with losing weight with a thyroid issue. So I have been hitting the gym 5-6 days a week.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
