When did you start to work out and what did you do?

Recommended Posts

Hi I am 15 days out and walking around the neighborhood and doing quite a bit of mall walking. But I am wanting to get back into the gym. I see my Dr on Thursday so I will ask too. But I am curious when did you go back to the gym?

I just want to walk on the treadmill, elliptical and bike. No weights for 6 weeks I was told. I want to work my way back up to running again and figure out the whole hydration thing while sipping and running. I think it might be hard.

I am down 32 lbs but I want to get the ball rolling even faster and hope going back to the gym will help.

Thanks,

Michelle

Don't do anything too physical until your surgeon clears you to do so. I was 4 wks out when he cleared me to jog/walk on my treadmill. Everyone's recovery is different, I did not have any complications and was back to work in a week. Others have not been so lucky.

Hi Michelle,

Thanks for your note. Thirty-two pounds in two weeks is fantastic :-) I didn't go to the gym right away because, to be honest, I was intimidated because I thought everybody was looking at me. I wish I had because I would have had results faster. I started going to the gym about 4 years ago BUT I have always walked for exercise. I only took two weeks off after surgery and I immediately started walking, first a low grade walk around a cul-d-sac by my office and then moved up to the hills. I eventually hired a trainer and she taught me a workout that is the same one (with higher intensity) that I use today. I do know that you can do any workout that doesn't exceed the 5 lb max you should be lifting and you shouldn't do anything with your core right now, list sit ups or planks, anything that you feel in your core. If you can find someone local who goes to the gym and can help you with a routine, I would recommend it. The best investment I ever made was hiring that trainer.

Good luck to you!!

Betsie

I'm almost 8 months out and I started exercises at 4 weeks

I started crunches at 6 weeks out it only did 20

Cardio is a must but I also do weight training

Good luck with your journey

I started slow walking the day after surgery, I was home. After a month I i started doing crunches and legs lifts and have built up to 500 a day of each. I get a 6 mile walk in almost every day and on the days when i'm pressed for time i still get two 1 mile walks in with the dog. Ive been working with kettle bells for 5 months now 7 days a week and love it. I dont go to a gym but there are tons of good instructional videos online line. Now that the weather is starting to break Im going to try taking my bike into the train station to go to work instead of the bus. Its about 7 miles with two big hills so Im going to do some practice rides first before I try to make it for the 615 am train.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
