April 2013 Post-Op Group

Had a bad night last night! I just broke down as the rest of the family was eating something different that smelled delicious! I went to get my dinner and started crying. My dad who has had the surgery asked me what was wrong... I said "I am just tired of eating the same things everyday. It's just so boring!" He has also had the surgery done and reassured me that the fist 3 weeks are the hardest and once I start adding more foods I won't even notice. I am so glad I have my parents to help guide me in this.

Home from the hospital. I'm feeling very sore. We had some issues with pain meds last night. Different nurses did different things. Inw said walk as much as possible and another said don't walk becausecyou heartrate is too high. I ended up not walking and got a lot of pain and came down with a fever. They got this under control and to my surprise sent me home. I am feeling better at home though. Being in control of my own care. I was not allowed to have anything to eat or drink the day of surgery. They did not bring me Water or chicken broth until about three pm yesterday. By then I was in pain due to them switching me from morphine to tramadol, I did not eat anything. I ended up having maybe eight oz of water last night and have had maybe 16oz of water today. I sleep most of the time.

Well I finally made it home. It's so nice to be in my own space. Catheter came out today, which wasn't too bad. I couldn't feel the drain tube coming out at all either--I was surprised. I walked a whole bunch today at the hospital to fend off boredom. The soreness in my tummy is slowly going away. I have 5 incision sites as well as the one from the JP drain. very little bruising noted. I did take one dose of liquid Lortab when I got home, but I don't feel like I need to take another one yet.

Unfortunately I did gain about 8 pounds in the hospital, I guess from the IV fluids. Hopefully that will go away quickly.

I have been having no trouble at all getting my liquids in...I hope I'm not doing anything wrong.

Hello everyone' date=' I made it to the post op group yay! Just a quick update on how I'm feeling. The pain is very tolerable, I actually found gallbladde surgery worse. Had my surgery friday morning and today was my hardest day. Not the pain tho...the nausea. Omg <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> I was crying and found myself regretting my decision to have this done. After alot of graval and zofran I was much better and I don't regret this at all. Everyones healing process is different and I have to remember that and remind myself that a few days of pain and nausea is worth the life change and happier healthier me. I'm home now resting and walking. My kids are ginornous helps! And the pain meds my Dr gave me are helping so much with everything. Hope everyone post op is doing extremely well and look forward to everyones success :-)

I am so happy for you. You seem to be getting back on your feet and on your way. Good to hear. I had gallbladder surgery about 5 years ago and it was rough. My surgery for Rny is 4/18 and my surgeon said gallbladder surgery is worse recovery wise. So I feel pretty about the Rny. Chin up! You got this!

Okay so i got to the hospital at 5am' date=' and checked in. Then they took me to the Pre-op area where I got my IV started and hooked up to lactated ringers and antibiotics. Then I met the Nurse anesthetist, operating room nurse, and anesthesiologist. Each of them reviewed my medical history with me, asked about allergies and such. my doctor came in and said hi. Then they gave me some sedation and took me into the OR. I woke up in recovery and had been there for about an hour and a half. My pulse ox and BP were continually monitored. I initially had some mild pain, about a 4 or 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. I have a morphine pump which I pressed every five minutes or so. When my room was ready they wheeled me there and my Mom was waiting for me. my mom is a retired OR nurse so she and my floor nurse chit chatted for a while which was a bit annoying cause couldn't follow the conversation due to the morphine. After Mom left, I dozed on and off since then. I am not needing to push the morphine pump for pain. I only have a slight soreness now. I have a catheter in and IV still. I just asked if I would be able to remove the catheter and go for a walk, but the doc wants me on bed rest today. No Water or ice chips or anything until tomorrow afteR my EGD <img src='http://www.bariatricpal.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> but they did let me brush my teeth thank goodness! My mouth is so dry. I am so happy to be on the Losers Bench!![/quote']

I am so happy for you! Thank you for your posting. Your details are like reading a great novel...lol. Mine is 4/18 so I'm hanging on to your every word! Do you know how long your surgery was?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
