Houston, TX- Support Group

Recommended Posts

Is there anyone out there that attends the support group at Central Market in Houston, Texas? I think it is the 3rd Saturday of the month.

If so, can you give me some insight on the meeting?

I was recently banded and feel it will be beneficial to me to participate in a support group.

Hope to hear from of you Houstonians!

I used to go to one at Park Place Hospital and for some reason I quit. I think I found an active member unbearable (kinda dumb, I know). I'd love to start going again. But at Central Market? Are they out there in the open so people just walk by and hear the conversation?

I will need to take a look at the piece of paper I have. Seems like it mentioned something about going "upstairs" for the meeting. Like you, I was uncertain about the atmosphere of a meeting if it were held there. That was another reason why I was hoping to hear from someone who is participating at this location. Hopefully they can shed some light on what to expect.

Anyone out there attend this location?????? We hope to hear from you.

Kim

Hi Kimmie,

I was also recently banded in Houston and have not attended any support meeting as of yet. I believe the one you are asking about meets upstairs at Central Market on the third Sat of each month. I have not seen anything mentioned about it recently and will be out of town, so have not really paid a lot of attention. Also, Dr. Spivak is sponsoring a new support group that starts on March 13th that is open to anyone, not just his patients. Try this link for the Houston area bandsters and ask your question there. You will probably get a faster response.

There are many support groups throughout Houston. I know that The Woodlands area has one and the Humble/Kingwood/Atascocita area. You might have to post about a specific area if you want one close to home.

Also, most of the doctors have support groups. They usually meet once a month in the doctor's offices so you might want to check that out as well.

Central market has an area upstairs for private meetings and cooking demonstrations. You will not be discussing your issues in front of the whole store.

Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
