Help, heartburn

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have heartburn? I used to get it frequently and badly before my surgery, but it stopped after I lost weight. Now it is back and really bothering me. Tums, etc does not help. It is a burning throat/chest sensation and not connected to eating or drinking. Help!

Seanmama: I think you should probably contact your doc and talk to him about it. Sounds a little like it could be reflux.

What type food are you eating? How soon after you eat, are you lying down? Try elevating the head of your bed on some blocks and sleeping like that. I've been doing that for years for reflux. If this problem continues, please see your dr. Reflux should not be ignored. Best of luck to you!

Hey Seanmama..what is your current fill level..sometimes that could be what it is. A slight unfill can help. Too tight of a fill can cause reflux and heartburn. Even though you may not have had a fill in awhile it still could be the problem. Definately is it persists call your doctor. You do not want to do permanent damage to your esophogus (sp?)

Best of Luck,

Thanks ladies!

I am currently at what I think is my "sweet spot". I only have 1.25cc in, but can eat almost anything, only a very small amount though! This is a far cry from 2 previous fills when I have been too tight and ended up unable to swallow anything. The difference is now it does not hurt every time I eat- which is what happened before.

Hi Seanmama,

I agree with Penni. I think you should discuss this with your band doc. I have read too many posts from people who have done serious damage by ignoring these signs. You may not really be at your sweet spot... you may be too tight and I have heard as little as .1-.2 of a cc may help to relieve your symptoms... to me this would be better than waiting and possibly doing some damage that will require your entire fill to need removal until you heal.

Take care and all the best. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
