Gastric Bypass and how it affects your kids?

Recommended Posts

The closer I get to a surgery date the more worried I become about how it will affect my kids. Am I just over analyzing it? I am a single mother of 4. Granted they are all older, the youngest is 12 oldest is 17, but it still worries me. All of my kids know how to cook, I taught them early, they all are capable of doing chores and laundry, but the fact that I will be pretty much out of commission for a little while scares me. Does anyone else have this fear, or am I just crazy? Any insight on this issue would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I only have 1, he's almost9 and loves being my assistant. He really took it all in stride and was a huge help toting laundry and stuff. He's also my #1 cheerleader and every few days has to say something like 'you really look pretty mommy, you must have lost a lot more weight'. He's been a great mommy sitter :)

That is soo sweet! LOL mine are older, they are past the sweet stage. I am sure they will help out with everything, I'm just worried I may be putting too much on them.

Kids are strong! I have a 13 year old son and he started cooking after I had the surgery. He went grocery shopping and did laundry as well. I had open bypass so I was out of commission for a while. He's so proud of me, especially the fact that I quit smoking on the day of surgery and I no longer drink. He's my best friend even though I think he's jealous that he's not going to be the only child later on this year.

I am also having open bypass surgery, I quit smoking 7 mos ago as well, my oldest went with me to my initial consult with the surgeon, a support group meeting and to my nutritionist class, I know without a doubt she will be willing to do whatever needs to be done, especially since she'll get to boss around the other 3 kids, I just cant get rid of the guilt for having to ask it of my kids. I am the parent, not them. Does that make any sense?

Let them step up to the plate. It's good for them and it will be good for you to let go a little bit. They will be stronger then you think and you will get to see the compasionate side of them. You wont be out that long where it will be of any detriment to them. Good luck girl. Let them prove to you that you have taught them well.

Agreed! There's a difference between abusing them and letting them help and be responsible for stuff.....man I used the no lifting >10 pounds for six weeks rule the entire 6 weeks when my son was around :)

Lol! Yeah! The pill did not work for me :-( Monday I'll be 9 weeks post op and Tuesday I'll be 8 weeks pregnant. I was told for 13 years that the only way to "probably" have another baby would be ivf.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
