How much of the protein shake are you able to consume?

Recommended Posts

I'm pre op & I'm trying out Protein Shakes. I feel so full by drinking 8oz of milk and one scoop of Protein Powder. How much were you able to actually drink after surgery?

I can drink it all but it takes me about an hour!

I can drink all of mine just fine...generally it only takes me about 10 minutes. I'm almost 3 weeks post op. I use light soy milk and a soy Protein isolate powder. I found I was lactose intolerant with any of the whey Proteins. I wonder if you may be experiencing some lactose intolerance too.

I'm definitely lactose intolerant. I haven't had surgery yet though. So I'm not sure if it will get worse or not after surgery. I use the lactaid milk already since I get awful almost instant gas pains if I use regular milk. I just noticed that I got full really fast with the Protein shake. I guess I was so surprised how full I was with a "regular" stomach. I wasn't sure how uncomfortable I'd be trying to do that with a "pouch".

At 4 weeks out, I can only drink half, but I always use ff milk and blend with ice.

I consume about 12 oz, click Decaf coffee powder blended with Water and ice on my 45 minute commute to work. I typically finish it just as I am pulling into the parking lot.

I was using lactose free milk before as well, but apparently from what the nutritionist told me you can be lactose intolerant to whey Protein itself....so if your shake has whey protein you may want to try switching to a soy protein isolate.

I'm a week post op today! I have only been able to drink a single 14oz Protein shake if I sip it all day. I get the 50gram per bottle Protein Drink so it helps a lot with meeting my Protein requirements. I get full very quickly. Can't even get a full egg in. I usually have meals that are 1/8 of a cup total and feel satisfied but not overfill. Definitely have to wait half an hour before and after to drink anything.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
