Coming out of Anesthesia and Nausea when waking

Recommended Posts

My question is about the immediate reactions after anesthesia....

I have special circumstances because I am allergic to morphine and get highly nauseous. In the past, my operating team has given me certain meds (its a steroid) to prevent that nausea..... I also get a scopalamine patch behind the ear

I also HATE being tubed and have experienced sore throats for weeks after past surgery.

So when you come out of anesthesia, and you begin to throw up, how difficult is that? Can one even throw up since they just did stomach surgery????

I was nauseous but did not get sick.. The nurses were great about getting that under control... An I was never nauseous again. I'm sure there is an alternative to morphine... They typically give anti nausea meds prior to the iv pain meds as well.

I was nauseated for days but from the Fentanyl they gave me for pain. My surgeon switched the med and I started to feel better. We had a long discussion regarding nausea because this was a fear of mine. I had a scopalamine patch and was given zofran, regaln and phenergan as needed. I never threw up just was nauseated. I still use Zofran as I continue to have occasional bouts of nausea after eating. It is random so one never knows what will cause me to be nauseous

You can throw up- I did once when I was home- the great thing is you no longer have that stomach acid and enzymes, bile that usually comes up. .

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
