Dr. Amson in Victoria

Recommended Posts

Hi There

Does anyone have any information about Dr. Bradley Amson in Victoria?

I've finally got my husbands ok on this but I need to find the least expensive place to do it in Canada. I want to make sure that the Dr. is good too and that the waiting list isn't too long. Also what is the name of the clinic in Victoria? I think it may be a little less expensive than Toronto.

Thank you!!

Hi,

I live in Victoria, and Dr. Amson is maybe a tiny bit cheaper than Toronto, but he has a looooonnggg wait time. I saw my GP in January and I got a referral date of April 1, 2008. Dr. Leung in Surrey is cheaper than Dr. Amson, about 13000.00, but I'm not sure how long the wait is - I am waiting for a referral to him, but I haven't quite heard yet. I will be talking to my GP's office tomorrow, so maybe I can give you more info tomorrow.

Cheers,

Laura

Thank-you Laura. 16K is hard for my husband to swallow you know? I want to be comfortable too.

Thanks for any help and info you can give me. If things don't work out there are you considering going to Toronto?

Thanks, Donna

If time is important,I went to TLBC in Toronto 16K but no wait time. I made my first phone consult on Jan 19th and I was banded on Feb 2nd . That was fast ! :clap2:

Dr. Amson did my surgery in February. Total cost was $15443.00 and all fills are included. Once he put me on the surgery list I only waited 2 months but I had to wait 7 months for my initial consult. He will not do the surgery unless you can prove to him that you are committed to changing your lifestyle, ie. diet and exercise. Perhaps if your gp said on the referral that you wanted lapband it might speed things up as the majority of his patients are waiting for rny. You could call his secretary and ask. Her name is Sheri. He is an excellent surgeon and I have no complaints. In a way, the long wait was good for me because it gave me time to prepare emotionally/mentally. Good Luck!

I talked with their office about 2 weeks ago and their first new patient appointment is in 2010!! Plus, Dr. Amson doesn't want to maintain fills for anyone other than his own surgery patients.

You might also want to look into Dr. Woodhead in Delta. I've seen a few posts lately from people that have had surgery with him and they are happy with how everything went with him. I'm not sure of his wait time or price....

I went to Northwest Weight Loss Surgery Center in Everett, WA for my surgery because of the wait times for local (Van area) Dr's and was very happy with them. I can't tell you the exact cost because all my paperwork is at the accountant right now (using medical expences on my return) but I think it was right around $15,500 including all pre-op visits, surgeon visit, aneasthesiologist cost, surgery time, as many support meetings and classes as I want, and the first 13 months of fills.

Shopping around is important but cost is not the only deciding factor. Make sure you are comfortable with the surgeon and all his staff because they are ultimately going to play a huge part in your success...and in some cases the extra $$ is worth it for a good fit between you and your Dr's ^_^

Good luck and all the best !!!

Dr. Woodhead in Delta is my surgeon and he is fabulous. His cost is $14,000 (+$400 for first consult), this includes the cost of aftercare fills. I believe that currently his wait times to be expected are approximately 1 month to get consult and then 1-2 months (closer to 1 I believe) to get surgery.

I understand from other patients is that he expects you to diet for a certain period of time and show a weight loss and that you are committed to changing your lifestyle. Even with the band that that is pretty hard to do. For instance, after two years, I am still forgetting to chew my food thoroughly annd some of my food choices are not the best. I am sure you will convince the good Doctor of your sincerety.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
