How much HELP do I need on the day I get home?

Recommended Posts

Dear Newly Post Ops!!

My question is on the day you get released from hospital how much help do you need??

How many days do you need help for??

I do not have kids, and will have no responsibilities except to follow my Dr's orders, and recover...

Aside from monitoring me for illness or something, why exactly do I need someone to stay with me?

Your experiences please?

Thank you

It just depends on you i would have been fine at home by myself you just can't bend down to pick up something and can't drive you don't eat much so no cooking just walk some and rest and sip sip so as long as you have someone for emergency and at worst call 911.

The day I was released my husband picked me up and took me home. He works 3rd shift so he went to bed and worked that night. He made sure I was comfortable in the recliner and had my Water and pain meds beside me and I was set. I even made him dinner that night. Everyone is different and also depends on how well you feel after surgery.

I have 4 kids so I needed a freaking army. But really if I was single and lived alone I'd be able to do it alone as long as had someone to call incase of an emergency.

Put Water next to your bed.. walk around the house every time you go to the bathroom and hit the kitchen during walks for warm broth and popsicles.

Stay on top of your meds and you're good.

I had a lot of pain & so had trouble getting up to the bathroom & needed help. Also, I had a lot of nausea & but for my significant other making me get Water in every hour, I'd have been back in the hospital. I was also weak & couldn't shower independently for a week. Everyone is different & I'm way on the not-so-great-post-op end of things, & by no means typical!

Now this resinates with me! I am glad you reminded me of the bathroom and showering. I too am atypical. In fact, I am a high risk patient (not due to weight issues). I am soooo optimistic about the surgery (unlike the past surgeries). I have a good attitude and I want to be able to be independent by day 3 (meaning at least 24-48 hrs after coming home).

Leticia Huggins - thank you too for reminding me about broth and popsicles. I am looking forward to grocery shopping the day before surgery. I have my list etc.

I am so excited and yet so scared at the same time. I do not want anyone's help though in my house. My friends kind of suck to be honest. We live in a new area and my husband is gone for a while and I have no family here. I am paying a pet sitter too.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
