Dumping Syndrome Question

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I pre op and working to lose 80 pounds before surgery. I've been doing very well on the pre op diet the NUT gave me, but last night I had a family emergency and broke down for a bacon cheese burger, fries, and a soda.

One of the reasons I have chose RNY over the sleeve is because I do want the dumping syndrome. I am curious as to what would happen if I gave into that temptation post op?

I thought dumping syndrome was when you eat to much or eat fatty and sugary things? I think you would have dumping and/or could bust your pouch. That's what I was told. I did cheat a little before my surgery but I am too afraid of the consequences if I do that now even a little. I am a believer I don't need to be that sick or worse to take this serious. I say its over now just don't do it again especially after the surgery. Everyone slips just don't keep it going. Hang tight. It will be worth it.

I agree with Nicki... The old saying... "we've came a long way baby" should be your motto. Never go back to the before.

One think your notice is you won't have that hungry feeling so it does make it a lot harder to binge ... You won't even look at that meal as an option. I can't imagine eating that much now that I've had surgery. My stomach would be so gassy, upset, tight and is be miserabl

Once I had my surgery I lost my appetite and at 6 weeks post op nothing has changed. I have had several dumping episodes but that was because I ate too fast and ate to much. I have learned my lesson NO More Dumping for me. I take it real slow and take almost 30 to 40 minutes to eat Breakfast. This is why I had the Gastric Bypass it is keeping me honest and on target.

Yup, weak, shaky, heart racing, queasy, headache, sweaty, feel almost like you could pass out....I haven't had pain with any of my episodes, that sounds more like eating too much too fast or just too big a bite of setting that got stuck for a bit. My bad bad dump was on 4 ounces of very loose cream of heat eaten over about 20-25 minutes.....it wasn't that I the too much it was that I am sensitive to carbs an had no Protein to help level it out. Fun times!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
