Hair loss - called tellogen effluviam

Recommended Posts

The Hair loss that we experience after roux en y is called tellogen effluviam. Our system basically goes into stress mode to heal our bodies from the inside out and it stops sending the signal to make your hair grow. So more falls out than is replaced. This also can happen after pregnancy or other traumatic event. The good news is that hair grows on a 3 month cycle - so it starts about 3 months out - and should end about at 6 months - although if you don't get everything balanced it can go to 9 months out. It will grow back and your hair follicles will recover. supplements and special shampoos and conditioners are mostly a waste of money - people perceive that they work because the cycle stops and hair grows back - it generally is not what you used or took (not talking here about the recommended Vitamins and supplements) but just that cycle that hair grows in.

Anyone else have advice about the hair, or has your Dr given you any useful advice?

I am a year post op and I took 6000 mcg of Biotin daily, I took 64 grams of Protein daily and drank all my Water on a daily basis. I never lost any hair. I did what my surgeon told me to do to prevent major Hair loss and it worked.

I too am affraid of telogen effluvium. I've had it happen 3 times in my life already from traumatic events and it was AWFUL. I don't take a ton of pride in my appearance, but I LOVE my hair. This was very devestating to me.

I have been trying to "heal" my hair now since an event caused this again 2 years ago.

I've read many topics here and people saying to increase your protien, but I dont think this helps telogen effluvium.

I am pre-op and just lost 30 lbs, and it's already starting for me.

So your Dr's advice was the Biotin???

With taking Biotin you really have to make sure your hair is moisturized to prevent breaking where the new growth and old growth meet.

Yes I agree I'm 5years out & what I found really helpful was to take collagen at night which I still do plus using good hair care products I have found using the Argin oil from Morocco has also been amazing!

in one of my past traumas, I lost about 2/3 of my hair. It was devestating to me (at the time). I am pre-op and it's starting again. I am off to the store to find Biotin today!!!

Any other specific Vitamin?

I often listen to Dr. Radio on Sirius/xm and I hear a dermatologist talking about T.E. she emphaisized that you really just have to "wait" it out but DID recommend on supplement called:

VIVISCAL - www.viviscal.com

She said Biotin would not help T. E. - but did recommend this supplement ( unfortunately quite expensive) (she was not a stockholder in the company) this is just the only thing that was found to sometimes help.

It might be worth it for you to try with your previous incidences of T. E. best of luck with your hair!

Well I will not be taking Biotin again.....

I started today and took a 5000 capsule in the AM with Breakfast, then late afternoon with a late lunch... I also ate 3x more today than I normally do and was excessively hungry. I haven't felt hungry like this in 3 months, and I actually just dropped 30 lbs (pre op).

So it happened that I was looking up the correct amount of Biotin tonight to be sure that 10,000 wasn't dangerous or anything and I was APALLED to see the dozens and dozens of people who said they gained weight and had additional hunger. Many stopped taking it, and numberour people never noticied a benefit in their hair regardless.

So today was the first and last day I will be taking it. I was sooooo hungry today and couldnt figure out why. Now I know.

Omg. I was just telling my coworker how hungry I've been all day long! Which isn't normal for me. I just started taking biotin yesterday.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
