RNY & Gallbladder removal

Recommended Posts

Looking for anyone who has had their gallbladder removed at the same time as the RNY surgery.

Can you tell me what the recovery time was like?

Also, from what I am reading, side effects of gallbladder removal can be diarrhea...but side effects of RNY can be constipation....which do you experience?

Is there anything that stands out as being different from others RNY experiences since you had the gallbladder out at the same time?

Thank you!

Having my gall bladder out was much more crappy the gbs. GBS on monday home tuesday. Gall bladder, abeiet as an emergency, on sunday and home friday, and i was way more sore than i was with gbs. My gbs was 3 years after gall bladder removal. However when my sister had her gall bladder out it was planned, in and out of the hospitol on the same day. Now that I think of it im not sure if this post helps answer your question or not.

I had my RNY and gall bladder together on 3/26. I have had some diarrhea and am still having some pain. Going back to work tomorrow after 2 weeks. Good luck!

I had my gallbladder removed 10 wks after my RNY. I wish I knew that the GB could be removed while doing the RNY. I never had any problem with the GB. I had a really bad attack about 8 wks post RNY. I had a ultrasound done and my GB was full of stones, I wish I knew that PRIOR to RNY !!!

The GB surgery was a set back for me because I was feeling great then the GB attack, I will be 1 yr post op tomorrow and doing fantastic !!!

I knew that I had stones last year when I had a scan for some other issues. I had never had any problems. Lately I have been having some pain but nothing I would classify as an "attack"

I have pushed to have it removed at the same time, knowing that WLS itself can cause issues and I don't want to go back under the knife. Plus...I am telling co-workers I am having my GB removed now and I can only had that once. Hahaha. I'm not sure what that's recovery is for a standalone GB removal. I guess that is something I'll have to work around.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
