List of Band to Bypass Patients

Recommended Posts

I'm band to bypass too. I should be having my surgery in May or June. I can't wait to have the band removed. I had my surgery in 2007 only lost 35 pounds but managed to gain back 70. I'm the heaviest I've ever been and can't wait to get to a healthy weight. I'm wondering if when the band is removed and I have the rny will it feel the same meaning will I feel like I'm suffocating? Will my new stomach feel uncomfortable like my port does? Will I be able to lay on my side without pain? Most important will I finally feel restriction after eating a half of cup of food? My Mom had rny in 1992 and has done a great job keeping her weight off. She doesn't eat a lot and will often forget a meal. When she wants to lose more weight she simply exercises and the pounds seem to melt away! She's never sick. And often says she would do it all over again. Please share any advice with us that are soon to be banded that may help us through this. Best luck to you all!????????

I can't wait to hear responses on this thread. You perfectly articulated exactly what I have been thinking about too! :)

I wonder the same things. Do you feel sharp pains in your band too? I do and it scares me when it happens. My revision surgery is scheduled for june 12th. Are u going to get completely unfilled ahead of time? I think im going to ask when I see my dr in may.

When I woke up after band removal the pressure and heaviness in my chest and shoulder were magically gone...(of course I did wake up without an RNY.....but 6 months later when I finally woke up with my RNY there was no heaviness or suffocating. It's delightful!

HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 220.2

Also....it's not restriction...you just get full and feel full, entirely different feeling. You feel satisfied, something I never felt with my band (or at least once you recover you feel full...at first my tummy felt nothing)

It's a wonderful world of difference between the band and the bypass. Amazingly wonderful. I'm one of the lucky ones who hasn't ever thrown up on the 5 months since the revision. It's heavenly. Good luck to you!

I never feel full with the band either. Im either sliming and throwing up or able to eat as much as I want. It is so encouraging to hear your outcomes. I was recently diagnosed with intestinal metaplasia (not barrets ) in my stomach without h-pylori and that was my main reason for wanting the band out. I think all the reflux and vomiting has caused my stomach cells to change. Luckily I am treated at mayo clinic and both my gi and bariatric doctor think it is safe and smart to do the revision.

I am only 2 weeks out so i dont know a bunch about the difference because im also only on liquids still.....so far the differences are 1) im not hungry at all 2) when i drink i dont get that weird feeling like its sitting waiting to pass through to my stomach i used to feel like my drink would come up 3) i have to mix one of my meds with an oz of applesauce and their have been a couple days where i couldnt finish the 1 oz and the last thing may not be the same for everyone and i dont want to make u nervous or anything because im still very happy with my decision but i feel like the pain and recovery are much much worse than ghe lapband but i also have heard several people say they had no pain at all

My band recoveries were a breeze compared to this conversion and I had two bands! I had one issue with some dry Turkey that brought back memories of the band and getting stuck...talked to my surgeon and he said it's tight in there and I may need a scope in future to dilate the tightness...needless to say I stay away from dry anything.....

I also had two bands and neither hurt like this but i also ended up with a bad infection this time and it had to be opened to drain and that has relieved some of the pain

Wow infection yikes..since I'm on the other aside now I wished I would have chosen bypass to begin with..in retrospect I really did research the band and was looking at less invasive surgery who would have thought I would be a band

failure! Even the port being sewed onto the muscle want as painful a my cut muscle after bypass....agony for 2.5 weeks..

Hopefully Karma doesn't come around and bite me as didn't have any problems with the band, until now. As I said in my previous post it just has to be removed since it slipped, so scheduled for 5/23 at 1:00 PM. Will have to wait two months, per the doctor, three months per the nurse for RNY. So what I am hoping for is that I don't have a problem with RNY, such as the pain, and everything else that is being described. Everyone at work that has RNY, and there are quite a few, tried talking me into the RNY when I had the band. Boy that was my mistake. Now I will be having my third major surgery in three years and I'm no spring chicken, I'm an old roasting hen. Really enjoy reading all the post that way I get some idea of what to expect once I have the RNY. Thanks to all of you.

Good luck with it...my opinion so far is its way better than the band even though the healing is harder

With some luck hopefully it won't any worse than when I had my gallbladder and total hysterectomy. Was back to work in four days with the gallbladder and 10 days with the hysterectomy, Will have to take a wait and see attitude. With the removal of the band I would like to be to work on Tuesday after surgery the previous Thurs which would be six days. But will stick it out if it is too bad. The RNY might be a different story for a different day.

Other than the fatigue my recovery has been a piece of cake, rarely took pain meds, most pain was controlled with a heating pad and occasional Tylenol. I can eat anything, meat, bread, Pasta, in small amounts and don't get 'stuck' I do dump so I have to get Protein when I eat carbs or I feel BAD. I was back at work full time 2 weeks post op, I took a week off with my band....so it took me a little longer to be up and running!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
