Kind of gross bowel question...

Recommended Posts

...so I really hope I'm not offensive.

Yesterday was my first 'post band' mushy meal. I had a bit of filet of baked fish, and about 1/4 cups of creamed spinach and I was full. This a.m. I woke up and had to BM. I have not had any 'solid' BMs as of yet - to be expected. Most of the time, its like I'm peeing. Anyway - I would swear that the spinach never digested. Was bright in color, and appeared to be the same as it went in. Is this possible? I'm a bit nervous, as I want to be sure everything intestinally is still working the right way. Want to be sure I'm digesting! Then the green color had me worried, as I know that can sometimes mean infection.

Sorry for the grossness factor. :omg:

not offensive as we all must well you know...poop

That seems pretty normal to me, especially after all the liquids you have had. Hang in there and all will normalize. It really doesn't sound like infection.

Very normal. We can't digest plant cell walls - or most plant matter (for that matter, haha). This - along with chewing behavior - is why most people poop corn, Tomato skins, cabbage, etc. Spinach is no different. Plus think of the consistency of cooked spinach - flat, and slippery when creamed. No way that's getting chewed up like something like a crouton would.

Generally spinach comes out as it goes in. I always knew when the residents at the nursing home I used to work at had spinach. Their urine was bright green and their BM's had spinach in it. I always tried to convince the cook to prepare spinach for St. Patty's day. LOL. Best of luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
