Dry Skin after Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm based in the UK and had my op Feb 8th. Has anyone experienced dry skin? I have now got on my legs, I know probably I have to up my Water intake. Just wanted to know other folks experiences and how you dealt with it? I am now slathering my legs in the hope it will create a balance and the dry skin will slow down if not stop,

Hi, had my surgery in December! There are some hormonal changes occurring and dry skin is one of the side effects. I used lotions and a really good moisturizing soap in the shower. Adding humidity to the house will help, too. If it continues to be a problem let you doctor know. Congrats!

I use Neutragena twice a day everyday plus drink about 10 cups of Water. It really helps.

I have bad dry skin and am breaking out horribly. I know it's because I'm not meeting my liquid intake targets.

This site is great! I like the fact I don't feel alone and that others are going through the same thing. I have been applying cream all day to my legs and drinking only Water. Dry skin was this morning looking like fish scales, will have to keep this in check.

Had my surgery feb 6th yes dry skin started at week three I have been using Vitamin E oil after my shower and I let air dry. My hair became dry too, not falling out but dry. I use really good Shampoo and I do not wash my hair everyday, when I do wash it I let it dry naturally half way the blow dry on low. I'm very anal when it comes to my hair skin and nails. I take 5000 mcg of Biotin and will bump it up soon to 10,000 as you pee out what is not used or absorbed. Hope that helped a little.

Many thanks for the reply. My nails grow quite quickly and thus far have not suffered nor dried out which I'm really happy about. I think also with the heating on it also dry out the skin so I have to re-apply a few times in the day. Getting there with the Water intake and think I'm up to about 70%.

Lots of Water, I use coconut oil in my cooking and on my skin. Make sure you are getting enough essential fatty acids. Stay away from chemical laden moisturizers or petroleum based creams.

I am having the dry skin issue after my by-pass surgery. I drink plenty of fluids. I think that part of the problem with me is the lack of fat in the diet for weeks before and after the surgery.

I was having it and post 6 days I went to walgreens and purchased Vitamin E Oil. I got the serum in the pump. I also got the 100% cocanut butter. I gotta look and see the brands. Spent maybe $10.

OH EM GEE... This has been my savior. My spots of dryness are my face, under my chin and my chest and back. I use the stick on the spots and also apply one pump to the areas. The first day I noticed a difference.

I livw by it now!

I am almost 6 weeks post op and I am having dry skin and hair issues as well. I am drinking 64 oz of Water a day and 60 to 70 grams of Protein. I have to agree with someone who said they think it is the lack of fat in our diets that is causing these issues. I use a soap that is high in moisture and a skin lotion after I dry off. I sometime let myself air dry since I live in Florida. I wash my hair everyother day and let it air dry since my hair is curly, the days I do not wash my hair I spritz water on my hair so it does not get frizzy. I am really hoping as I move forward and start to add more fat to my diet that this will resolve. I am thinking of also getting body oil to apply to wet skin after I shower and let it air dry. My legs and arms are starting to look like elephant skin.

Biotin is a great resource to add to your daily routine! I take 5000mcg right now and although I still have to use lotion- I don't use as much or as often. I love the hold bond ultimate healing lotion- it's the best ever! :-)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
