Been reading articles that say the quick weight loss that happens with gastric bypass surgery can cause gallstones to form and that it's quite common to have the gallbladder removed also during this procedure. Would love to hear from anyone who had theirs removed or wish you had it removed.

I had mine removed exactly two weeks after bypass. Very painful.

My surgeon said he will be removing mine at the time of surgery since gall bladder issues on both sides of fam. I guess that 1 of the perks of having open rny.

Had mine removed exactly 2 months after rny. Worst pain I have ever had. Still cannot lay on left side without feeling a pulling sensation on my right side going on 3 months since I had it removed

Wow, I'm definitely going to bring it up to my surgeon to see is he thinks we should go ahead and remove it while he's in there. I can't imagine having a gallbladder attack while trying to recover from rny :/

I signed the consent forms for removal of gallbladder and biopsy of Liver if necessary. Came out of surgery and with my gallbladder and no liver biopsy. I will definitely ask on my post op appointment why he felt it wasn't necessary to remove my gallbladder....We had this talk prior to surgery and told him to just take it out so that I wouldn't have to in the future..

Got some splainin to do lucy!

I'm supposed to have a liver biopsy but my gastro Dr won't let me do it when i have my rny. He said he does not want to risk a bleed so i told him then I'm postponing it until later after my rny.

interesting how different surgeons have different ideas...When I had my lap bands he told me he would biopsy my liver IF he thought I needed it. He didn't on either surgery. He told me I had a slightly fatty liver and the weight loss would correct it.

I forgot to add my rny surgeon is separate. I'm seeing the gastro for other health issues.

Great question !! I wish I had this information before I had RNY, my gallbladder had to be removed 2 months post op. My surgeon puts all his patients on a certain med that will not let stones form after RNY. My gallbladder was packed with stones which was obvioulsy there before surgery. If I knew this I would of had a ultrasound and have him remove it all while in there. My advise to everyone is to get a ultrasound of your gallbladder BEFORE surgery. If you need insurance approval just say you had a gallbladder attack, its real bad pain right side and under breast which goes acorss your chest. It feels like a heart attack. The gallbladder surgery was worse then the RNY !!!

In my case I did not have stones or sludge. Mine was 0% functioning. After five years of pain and ultrasounds i went and saw a new Dr and had a test and within 2 weeks i had it out. That was in Dec of 09.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
