crazycatlady8 0 Posted March 11, 2013 How long after surgery are u at risk for a leak?
nienie 113 Posted March 11, 2013 I know that the first 48-72 hours you have the highest chance of seeing a leak. My surgeon and program has us start taking in blue ice chips right after surgery and through the first 48 hours. We have jp drains and if we are leaking the blue would show up in jp drain. We also have a swallow study early the following morning (between 2-4 am and then another swallow study a few hours later. Basically checking for leaks and making sure pouch is emptying. After we pass that we are advanced in diet to Jello, pudding, Soup, milk. I am not sure how much longer after that we are at risk. I would imagine if you don't follow post op diet first two-three weeks you could bust out and leak. Good question for you surgeon
