Your surgeons office did not give you a list? Mine consists of blood work and a ekg.

Every surgeon is different and it also depends on age and current health issues. I had tons of lab work done. I didn't need an EKG, sleep study or EGD prior. I did have to make an appointment for a psych eval and had dietary consultation for six months via phone.

Must be 18

Must show 5 years of weighing in overweight catagory

Must have 6 months of visiting your PCP

Must show 6 months of visiting a Nutritionist and working on both diet and exercise

OH OH OH - all these appointments below are in person - doesn’t calculate for travel time to the offices - copays - waiting time in the office - time away from work - time paying a babysitter - you can figure out how much I’ve put in so far

THEN you can see a surgeon - who will ONLY schedule you after he gets a referral - and ONLY then can you get on his calendar - which takes weeks or months depending on the time of year

then

meet with a nurse for an hour

a dietician for an hour

your surgeon for an hour

letter from the dr. (my regular dr) giving clearance

2 group sessions (which are held at night an hour away) (so TWO MONTHS - and TWO appointments)

psych eval - 700 questions from a dr and an interview (scheduled FIVE hour exam)

pulmonary eval - pulmonary function test - sleep apnea review - which can be up to 2 overnight sessions (3-5+ appointments with the pulmonary department)

see the endoscope dr - schedule an endoscope (office visit and outpatient surgery which puts you out for 12-24 hours)

blood work (fasting)

gall bladder ultra sound (fasting)

exercise physiologist (2 hours)

ONLY IF IT’s ALL IN - then the paperwork goes off to the insurance company who has 30 days to respond - which doesn’t mean they will approve

then - the paperwork lady calls you and sets up an appointment to:

go back to the surgeons office to do a final check list for the surgery

meet with your dietician

buy your pre-surgery diet foods with the office

start your two week supervised strict diet

yah - I think that spells out my process...

I really feel sorry for the people who complain about how many hoops THEY have to jump through - must be real hard.

I have already done my psych evaluation. And submitted to insurance and been approved. No insurance hoops for me. I was just wondering what the tests are that they run right before surgery. Not the whole process

I got mine when i saw everyone in a six hour visit. Was just told not to do it before thirty days out. You shouldn't have that much to do. :)

Also forgot i have to get a chest xray. Its pretty much the standard for most surgeries.

Most of them depend on your insurance. My surgery is 4/29 I started the process on 11/13 and I've had to have pulmonary clearance, chest X-ray, bloodwork, nutritionist and psych. Some docs want more, the initial doc I saw wanted a sleep study, scope of the stomach for bacteria. The way I see it it's all worth seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck!

I had to do everything but the scope and sleep study. I've been sleeping with a bi pap since 09. That light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer :)

Call your insurance company - I got a completely different answer - zero copay - zero deductible - no pre surgery requirements - so I beg to differ with the insurance company comment

Insurance policies and coverages and companies are not cookie cutter. It plays a big role in this process. My aunt and I are doing this together. She had to stop the process last year when her employer changed insurance providers and they required being on that plan for one year before even consulting with a rny surgeon. I have a 6 month wait she has a four month wait. I pay no copays she pays 20. My surgery is completely covered she pays 30% out of pocket. I had to have 6 weigh ins, nutritionist, pulmonary, heart group and xray, blood work, psych. she had to have 4 weigh ins, blood work, psych and nutritionist. In our doc office there is someone dedicated to working with the insurance company on the patients behalf and knowing exactly what the requirements are with each insurance company. Just saying ;) Happy Sunday! 48 days!!!

Blood work and probably chest ex-ray. Every doctor is different. Everything seems to move very fast after your insurance approves you. I bet you have a surgery date soon.

Yes everything has moved so fast. I didn't expect insurance approval so soon. Thanks

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
