Hey guys :-) I had RNY on Jan.28th and as far as my diet goes I wasn't doing too great. Solids don't sit too well with me so I'm still eating puréed and soft foods such as yogurt, pudding, mashed potatoes, tuna etc. The problem is once I eat, I feel great, pouch is satisfied. But 2.5-3 hours later, my pouch feels empty and I have painful cramps and I get real nauseous. So I'll drink some Water to no relief and then need to eat again. My question is...do I realistically need to eat something every 3 hours for the rest of my life to avoid this? And why does it hurt so bad when my pouch is empty? Thanks in advance for and advice given

I actually asked one of the people in my program about that once. She said eating smaller meals every 2-3 hours will not work for a bypass patient because it would cut so much drinking time out of the day, you'll never be able to hydrate enough. BUT maybe if you're feeling hungry you could have a little Soup or something that IS liquid, so it wouldn't cut back on those. If that doesn't work, I'd talk to your nutritionist to see what they suggest.

Or maybe try increasing your Protein at meals or fill in the time with a Protein Drink, might keep you full longer.

Actually, I was having the same issue at your point and my Dr told me to eat or have 1/2 a Protein Shake about every three hours. It is a juggling act with Water but it helped me. I was getting wicked nauseated. It only lasted a few weeks and now I can go longer since I can eat more Protein.< /p>

Thx guys. I tell you this sure is a new life. Feels like a Protein & Water merry-go-round! Do you know of anything other than zofran that works for nausea? That doesn't seem to work for me.

If you don't want to take prescription drugs for nausea try "sea bands" drug free they are used for cancer patients who suffer terrible nausea. My hubby and I use them they really work!

But I did want to ask you ladies about this pain I'm feeling. On my left side below my ribs, a painful cramping and stabbing. I confuse it sometimes with hunger. Idk I'm going to call my surgeon tomorrow

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
