groovykg 23 Posted March 5, 2013 Did any of u have to give yourself Lovenox injections post op? Did u follow through religiously? I ask because I was given a prescription for 14 days, which costs $100. When I went to fill the script on Saturday, they only had 5, so they gave me those, charged $50, and told me to come back by Wednesday to get the rest. In the hospital, with skilled shot givers, I totally didn't mind it. At home, whether hubby or I do it, it hurts like a $&&@"%^! I have a BMI of 38 and am fairly active with 3 small children, so I don't think I have the same risk factors as someone with a higher BMI and is mostly sedentary. So, I'm tempted to not pick up the remaining prescription, because I will have already had a full week of blood thinners. I have a follow up on Friday. Do u think they will let me off the hook? Do they do lab work at the 1 week follow up so they can check my coagulation or whatever?
Jessica9190 127 Posted March 5, 2013 My BMI was about 38. My doctor said I wasn't high risk so he wasn't going to prescribe them to me. However I had an uncle who had gastric bypass and died from a blood lot two weeks later so I asked for them and he gave them to me to ease my worries. My point is you are probably low risk and it would be ok if you're comfortable. When in doubt always ask your doctor. There may be other factors besides BMI that contribute to the need for the shots. Good luck.

padlrd 183 Posted March 5, 2013 They should check your inr it checks clotting factor it's strange how every dr has such different protocol
padlrd 183 Posted March 5, 2013 Also they gave those to me after surgery in my thighs which doesn't hurt or bruise as bad my dr wouldn't slow in stomach after surgery
Cluck21 4 Posted March 5, 2013 I would call the surgeon. Why wait for the appointment? Lab work won't help, Lovenox cannot be tracked via INR. It is a low molecular weight heparin. One thing to remember is that if (God forbid) you end up with a clot of some kind post op, the insurance will go after the MD for not following best practice standards. I don't think I'd tempt fate on this one. 1 Tim Sebora reacted to this
groovykg 23 Posted March 6, 2013 But is it standard practice? Or does it just depend on patient? Maybe I can ask hubby to do them when I'm asleep. 1 Cluck21 reacted to this

Some don't require it at home only in the hospital. They are so painful. I skipped two days but I will suck it up and will have hubby do it tonight. Tomorrow no one will be here to do it so I will have to go without. My last one is suppose to bed friday. The ones in them hospital seem to bed different. ncdeking 18 Posted March 6, 2013 Wow I feel lucky. Does yours hurt? It stings a little a few seconds after I do it. Nothing major but still very unpleasant. Sent from my iPad using RNYTalk
