Questions About EGDs? Please Help!

Recommended Posts

For anyone out there who has had an EGD as a part of their list of things to have done before surgery I have a few questions. I'm supposed to have this done tomorrow morning, Tues the 5th. I've had to reschedule this already due to weather and I don't want to have to reschedule again but...I'm kind of recovering from a bout of flu, courtesy of my 5 year old. I'm feeling loads better today except my throat is still pretty sore. No fever, muscle aches, etc. Just a bit of a stuffy head, a little congestion in the chest, and the sore throat.

I'm wondering now if I should just see how I feel in the morning and go for it, let them know when I get there and see what THEY want to do, or call can see if I can reschedule this..again. Which will put me behind on every other appointment that I already have for everything else.

To top it off I'm wondering if I missed something in the discussion of this procedure because everywhere I've looked for info the web is saying that you should stop all NSAIDS (Aleve, Ibuprofen, etc.) 5 days before the procedure, but my surgeons nurse never told me this and I've been taking Aleve for muscles aches and sore throat. I take Aleve because it doesn't irritate my stomach like ibuprofen so that isn't an issue. I don't actually have anything issues with GERD, ulcers, or stomach issues right now, this is just a precaution that my surgeon likes to take so they can have a picture of all the insidey goodness before they go rearranging things later. So I'm wondering if I should just go for it and if the NSAIDs have bothered my stomach they would know that and we could discuss it.

I also have to keep in mind that I have to travel 80 miles to have these appointments and to get things done, plus I already have nut, physical therapy scheduled for tomorrow also. Plus they already have my sleep study scheduled and I have my psych eval and some other labs scheduled out too. If I can't do the EGD, they'll have to reschedule some of that stuff and I don't want to do that.

If you guys have any pointers I would appreciate it!

Call your gastroenterologist There is no discomfort in the exam, but if they take a biopsy you may bleed. I'd call.

You should definitely call before you go. I have a feeling they will cancel your procedure anyway when you tell them that you have been taking Aleve. Before my EGD my nurse made me verbally admit in front of the doc that I was mistaken when I said that I had taken motrin the previous 5 days. I haven't taken motrin since 2010 prior to getting banded, but for some reason my brain was working a little slow that morning and I said yes when I asked. The nurse originally thought I was lying so they wouldn't cancel the procedure.

Definitely call them and ask. They'll let you know if you can go ahead with it or if you have to reschedule.

Good news is they went ahead with the EGD and didn't find anything. The bad news was I got sick after the procedure and I had to cancel my other appointments for the day. But I managed to get my spots rescheduled so that I don't get behind.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
