Did anyone have to take at least one class before there surgery?!?!?? Jeez I know there are a bunch of "mills" out there that just do bypass and dump the patient after a year.... If you have a good surgeon and good Bariatric office you are a lifer... If you go on the Internet and read the gold standard RNY bypass you will read about drinking with meals' date=' dumping syndrome etc...

Why would anyone opt for this surgery if they are going to cheat or go against the guidelines that were specifically made for this procedure.... I have read tons of complications for this procedure in my everyday job caused by careless patients and some caused by surgery. Sorry I'm off my soap box now....

Well i didn't have any classes only one therapy session and that's it,I really wish I'd taken my time to learn more about afterwards and to find a surgeon who really cares,my first consultation was on 1/27/13, and my surgery was 2/26/13.now im on my own when i call his office his nurse that deals with Gastric bypass patients has a attitude the rest don't even know what to say and his bedside manner is terrible.i had my one week follow up then once a month follow ups. I've gotten more info here than i have from my surgeon and if I'd known before what I know now I would've acted on a impulse thought to have this surgery mentally i wasn't ready im not eating right and more depressed than ever but i guess it's too late to turn around now.

I have been drinking with meals to get full.....anyone else do this....

I was told no fluids with meals. It dilutes the stomach contents and flushes them fro. The stomach faster. Takes longer to feel full and you consume more calories...which is what got me in this mess to start with.

I had 6 months of tests...physical and mental. Although support groups are suggested...many people don't go. I hit 2 or more a month when I am at home. Do I cheat...sometimes. I still struggle with salt and such right before my period. I am much more diligent the other 3 weeks. The more I lose the more active my life style becomes.

My nutritionist told me that liquids go basically straight through your pouch so I can drink up until the point I start to eat. After I eat I have to wait 30 minutes for a drink for the same reasons everyone listed here.

One time I ate an egg that I had salted and peppered a little too much so I thought I'd just take a sip. It hurt so badly. I have learned I can't eat and drink at the same time or it's painful. I guess that's a good thing for me. It keeps me from cheating. Lol

I really only drink before I get my

food then wait awhile after I eat.....

At restaurants I'll now just order Water and take very small sips. Don't even drink 1/4 of it. Hopefully I'll get to the point where I remember to tell them I don't want a drink at all.

This is a big no from my doc and nut. I was told your stomach needs time to absorb nutrients from food and also it will cause your stomach to stretch. I get sick and uncomfortable if I drink too soon after eating!

I often wonder this! I have had 6 months of appointments with the dietician, and surgeon. Had to attend mandatory support groups and a 4 hour pre op class. While I say I wish I didn't have to wait, it has given me time to research and really learn and understand what I am doing. I feel that I am going into this with the knowledge I NEED to succeed, thanks to my Dr and his great staff! And after all of that, why would I risk it by not following the rules? I want this too much!

Exactly! I am so glad that I had to go through the program I was in. And I went through it twice! While you're in the program, all the stuff they make you do really seems like overkill. But looking back now I am so glad. I'd much rather know this process in and out than not be informed. I am more than comfortable with my decision and I know should I have any questions or concerns there is a whole team of specialists I can call at any time. It's very reassuring and comforting.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
