Should I be worried about my age?

Recommended Posts

I am considering surgery in April due to a trip planned in March. Are there any other "older" patients out there? :phanvan

Am I crazy at 57 to be considering this surgery? I have 100 pounds to lose to be a "normal" weight and have other issues like Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I feel like the band is the perfect tool to support my weight loss process, and not regain the weight. Which has been a lifelong pattern. I'll be watching and hope to hear from you.

Thanks,

Hi Mini, honestly the best place to start is to read this thread:

This topic has come up a lot lately. I'm 54 and banded about a month now. I'm happy I did it. Remember, 60 is the new 40.

Best of luck on your journey.

My mom had lap-band surgery at 57. I think it was a great move for her! As you get older its more important than ever to keep your weight down. Don't worry about your age.

Thanks,.

I think that I am the oldest on the site currently. I had my 66th birthday on January 30 and had my surgery on Jan 31, 2007. I consider my age the major reason for getting the band. I have been fairly lucky with my health (if you don't count bypass surgery in 1989-no problems since) but decided that if I didn't do something to help it along, it was going to start to pay me back for all of the abuse. Did very well with the surgery and have firmly convinced that this is the best decision I have made in a long time.

Don't ever feel foolish for doing what is best for you, no matter your age.

Nope, don't give it a thought. Plenty of us out here who have had the band and are doing really well. I was 58, had the surgery May 23, '06, have lost 77 pounds and have about ten to go. I feel great and when I saw the pic of me that the surgeon took just before surgery I almost didn't recognize me. Talk about a shock! :)

Thanks for all the support and information. I think it is wonderful to have this website to ask these questions. I already work out 4 -5 times a week at the gym, so part of my journey is underway.

I deserve to have a healthy life, at whatever age! Thanks again,

I was just banded on 2/12/07 and 2 months from turning 60. No, you are not too old. I'm looking forward to being a "better me" for whatever years I do have left. May as well go out in style!

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
