3-month post-op food cravings bread and cookoes

Recommended Posts

For the first since since surgery (post-op 3 months) Cookies ad bread were placed in front of me at a lunch and I craved them. I resisted them and ate an Atkins Protein Bar instead. But my brain kept telling me, "your stomach can handle bread and cookies." What is your experience post ? Do you ever eat bread or cookies? My surgeon's office recommends avoiding bread if possible because of the carbs. I agree, I am afraid that if I open the door to eating bread again, I will always eat it.

Any carbs like bread or crackers makes me feel so sluggish... I avoid them even after a year my head still craves them but I really don't like the after affects. I haven't tried cookies... Never was much of a sweet eater... But lord those carbs....

I have a friend that had bypass Years back she told me when she wants something like a cookie she had just one. Her MD told her that is the key. Just because one goes down easy doesn't mean two, three our four will.

Satisfy that want. Same as that fork of birthday cake!

I have eaten both and my doc says it is ok if I can tolerate. The key is to eat enough to satisfy the craving. Last week I wanted Peanut Butter on toast and had it several times that week. Just one slice and I was fine. When I want sweets I eat just a bite and I feel ok. If I sat down an eat an entire slice of cake I would be so sick, but that one bite and my head says thank you and my stomach is nice enough to allow my head one bite.

I will also say my doc office does not have us count carbs or calories. They say eat lean and clean and everything will fall into place. He also says it is better to have real sugar than the fake sugar.

Mine is basically the same way. Carbs are part of my diet in small amounts. Ill have crackers and a half a slice of toast on the weekends. I have had bites of cake and Cookies and that's enough. Not often but it keeps my sanity. Also I have a cast Iron pouch Not much bothers me so it is all will power.

I am 4 months out, I have also craved these things, I can tolerate a 1 slice wheat bread toasted, with Peanut Butter or something on it, but I usually tear off the crust! I have also had a cookie before but I usually eat a couple teddy grahams when I'm craving something sweet, but mainly stick to crackers.

This is going to sound really disgusting but if I'm craving something that we shouldn't eat, I put it in my mouth, chew it and spit it out then wash my mouth out with Water. It feeds my craving and yet I'm not swallowing it and gonna regret it later.

Hi Heather, I do that all the time. I don't think it's disgusting. Sometimes I sniff other people's food like a dog it satisfies me mentally.

I personally don't think is disgusting...no different then trying something and spitting it out if you don't like it. I've done that plenty of times post op too. I smell food all the time too. My friends and family have gotten used to. Lol Has anyone smell or taste changed since surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
