SueC1 27 Posted August 16, 2013 I spent three months preparing for the sleeve. After surgery was scheduled I changed my mind for several reasons1. I have bad acid reflux and sleeve can make worse 2. Only short term data on sleeve 3. Bypass is gold standard for WLS 4. I felt I needed more than just the restriction 5. I never could get comfortable with part of my stomach being trashed. 6. I prayed about it and feel God lead me to get RNY vs sleeve Those are just some of my reasons but ultimately it's up to you. Talk with your doctor and do what's best for you personally. I actually had the same points made that Jessica makes here. However, the biggest one she didn't list is diabetes. Doctor told me that RNY has a 85-90% cure rate. The Sleeve is only in the 60%. Once I heard the stats I didn't question the sleeve anymore.
music1618 879 Posted August 16, 2013 Honestly I was an open book. I knew that I was not a candidate for the band because of my rheumatoid arthritis. I interviewed two surgeons before making my choice and both of them suggested the bypass, but said the sleeve would work as well. My reasons for choosing the bypass were simple. 1. I wanted something with a long proven success rate 2. I wanted the malabsorption aspect. I am on steroids for my RA and was the main reason I was so overweight. You are hungry all the time and I figured if I continued on the steroids at least my body would not absorb all the calories. 3. My surgeon said I could do the sleeve now and if it didn't work he could go in and do the bypass - I figured why not just get the bypass and be done with it. 4. My surgeon said it was what he highly recommended with my added health issues. 5. I knew someone that had the band, and then the sleeve and he continued to eat junk and therefore gained weight back each time.
