My mom is 30 years post gastric bypass (at that time known as stomach stapling). She called this morning and last night, for the first time since she had her surgery, she got stuck on a food and had the whole chest pain, nausea, misery...30 years later! She was shredding carrots for slaw and ate a hunk of carrot and thinks she just didn't chew as much as usual :) (all is well today, scared the crud out of her though!!)

HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 234.8

No, but she's an exercise fiend. She's 62, dad is 65, they're both retired and 4-5 days a week they go to the gym for about an hour and a half. She eats on a small plate, gets full easily...she's done it all correctly. She's not tiny (a size 12-14) but she's also not built tiny, we got good German genes!

She is a kidney failure patient and on the transplant list, she had kidney issues prior to gaining weight. The told her when she was pregnant with me (I'm 39) that she wouldn't live to 40.....so yeah, she's pretty fabulous!!!!

Gotta love that good German stock. My mom always jokes that we have "square peasant hands"... even thin, I still had to buy my gloves in the men's section. Honestly! :(

Your mom sounds like an inspiration, though. I hope she gets the kidney soon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
