Nutritional guidelines post-op? Does anyone have the breakdown?

Recommended Posts

I came home with loads of information on what to eat and drink, but nowhere in my educational materials does it say what the breakdown of protein/carbs/fat/total calories should be per day.

Do any of you have this information? I'm a little over a week post-op.

My Nutrtionist said during the puree stage (weeks 2-5) we should be getting 60-80 gms Protein and 600-800 cals

WOW- I am a little over 4 weeks out and I only get 300 to 400 in a day. I just can't eat much at all and am not hungry so am concentrating on Protein, staying very low carb and liquids..

I've come to realize almost every doctor and nutritionist has different guidelines. The main thing mine drove home was to get in at least 6 cups of Water and 60-80 grams of Protein a day, both are hard to do in the beginning. I was also encouraged to watch the amount of sugar or sugar alcohol in everything and make sure the grams of protein are about twice that amount. If in doubt, call your NUT, it's their job to help guide you through this. :)

Oh, and I started out at around 300-400 from week 1-4. The Protein shakes alone were around 130-160 each and I used to drink two. From weeks 4-6 I got in around 400-600. I'm halfway through week 6, and if I've exercised I'll range from 300-550ish (according to My Fitness Pal which deducts calories burned).

Hope this helps. :)

You got it! I love sharing support and motivation! This has been a hard few weeks for me-tons of functions and foods-trying to figure out what to eat and stay on track. Next week is my 1st back at work. I thank God for this surgery because when I'm at a baby shower or party with all these people (family and friends) I pay more attention to what I am doing as well as what they're eating and drinking, (the types of food and drink and the amounts). And I think about where I was, with my plate or two of food, several drinks and sweets-I think how the hell did I do that to myself?? I don't like to say never, but I hope my pouch never grows and I'm this limited for the rest of my life because food is so dangerous. Even a bite here and a bite there can get you in to trouble of you let it!

Thanks! I finally got a call from my dietitian. She told me exactly what you said. She said if I follow the guidelines in the sample diet, and avoid fats and sugars, I should have no problem at all staying within those guidelines.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
