Gall bladder attacks

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had horrible gall bladder attacks 4-6 wks prior to their surgery date? We're you able to hold off so you only had to have surgery one time?

My clinic does a routine check of everyone's gall bladder prior to surgery and if there are any issues then they remove it during surgery as well. I had my ultrasound on my gall bladder this past Tuesday then before I even got the results back, I had two attacks last night (first time ever). The er dr got a copy of my ultrasound report & my gall bladder is enlarged & full of stones. I'm now getting ready to go to my pcp praying they can give me something to "hold me over" til my surgery date. Urgh, the pain!

They are the worst. I thought I was having a heart attack the first time. I have been able to manage mine for a couple of years by recognizing early when it's coming and taking pain meds. Also avoiding high fat and spicy meal. Mine will be removed with my gp. I hope you are able to get through it until your surgery. I've also had to go into the er several times to have them just knock me out.

OMG... .I wish I knew more about the gallbladder before I had my RNY because 10 wks after I had my RNY I was under the knife having my gall bladder removed !! I was just starting to feel 100%, I started running again etc. and them BAM !!! I had a really bad attack one morning where I did not know whether I was having a heart attack or a GB attack, I called my surgeon and they told me to get a ultrasound ASAP. My GB was loaded with stones !!! The only thing my surgeon warned about the GB was to start taking certain meds to avoid stones because of the decreased fat content. I really wish I knew about the GB because I would of had a ultrasound done PRIOR to surgery and have everything done all at once. Sugeons should really check before :(

I am 10 months post op and I still have gall bladder attacks eventhought mine was removed. I had a CAT scan and they said everything was ok and that there were no blockages in any of the remaining ducts. Hopefully you will not have another attack before surgery. I had to wait 3 wks until I could have surgery and thank God I did not have any more attacks. Good luck and I hope you hold out until surgery !!!

My surgeon actually has you take meds for 6 months post op to help prevent gall stones because apparently gall stones are a fairly common side effect of rapid weight loss.

Because of the high rate of GB issues with RNY that's why my clinic does an ultrasound prior and then if there are any possible issues they take it at the same time they do the RNY.

I just got back from my pcp & more labs were ordered cause of high liver values. Then she is going to talk with the surgeons to see about the possibility of moving up my RNY since I am at the end of my pre op appointments so I don't have to have two separate surgeries and so it won't set the RNY back.

Need all the prayers I can get right now!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
