I had surgery on Monday, Feb 18 and came home yesterday. The only pain I had was normal but it was intense. My surgeon said that was all normal, given I am sleeping longer and going longer without pain meds. Late last night and today I have been having some major back and shoulder pain. My heart is also racing a little bit. I called the nurse and she wants me to come and get some more blood work done and get evaluated. She said it could be just muscular or it could be a leak. I am so scared that something is wrong. The nurse actually wanted me to drive myself since my husband is at work. Called my husband and he is on his way to take me. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of pain and should I be worried?

I had the WORST back and shoulder pain for the first 2 weeks post op...in fact it was worst then the little pain I had from the surgery itself...and like you I didn't take any pain meds but I'm sure if I did it probably would have helped...but I would go to the doc just in case and for a peace of mind...you'll be okay

speaking from experience if they want you to go in please do , if for nothing just to rule out everything. it could be just bad gas, but as some who has been dealing with a fistula that will not close and a jp that pierced the abdomen wall, better safe than sorry! best of luck to you .

So I went in and did some blood work. Everything that they were looking for was normal. My doctor looked at my stomach and said that it all looked fine. He did not think it was a leak because I do not have any of the signs. He listened to my lungs and was concerned that I am taking in deep enough breaths. Also he said I should be moving around better than I am. The majority of my back and shoulder pain is from that. So I have to move around more and use the nebulizer much more than I have been. So I really have to work on this harder.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
