Will I need help after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I just found out my husband will not be able to get out of working the week after my surgery and I just wanted to know what people's experience was. Did you find that you really needed someone around when you got home from the hospital? What kinds of things did you need help with? And for how long a time period? My surgery is on a Friday morning (yay) so I will have part of a day home after being discharged before my hubby has to go to work. I assume I will be sleeping a lot...Oh and I do not have kids. Thank you so much!

The day I got home was the worst bc I was so uncomfortable. I got up early the following morning and took care of my 3 year old while hubby slept. The only thing I couldn't do was drive and push shopping carts. I did dishes, went to dance class with daughter and was walking a mile 2 days after surgery. The 1st few days I took pain meds as scheduled!!!! Then stopped. Nights were hard for me, I couldn't cover up by myself! Lame!! You will be fine!!

I stayed with my parents 3 days (I'm single with an 8 year old). Mom kept doing things for me and I kept trying to stop her :D you won't be doing laundry and vacuuming but you should e able to get a drink, use the bathroom....all the necessities. Jut don't get goofy and overdo it!!!

Thank you for the info!! I had a cyst taken off of my ovary years ago and had about a five inch incision. I could not do a thing for a while. I keep thinking it will be like that. I could not even get onto my bed and slept on the couch for several days. I even needed help getting on and off the dumb thing. SO all great info! Thank you!!

I wasn't completely helpless but I needed help getting on and off the bed couch was ok. I'm nearly 4 weeks post op and I still sleep on couch. I needed help tying my left shoe or reaching things on the floor. My hubby helped me wash for 2 days after i got home. I feel like a wimp. I always thought I was strong but I've had some pain with this that makes it difficult to do somethings. Just remember everyone is different and surgery affects everyone differently. Good luck and God bless.

I live alone with 2 large dogs, my BF picked me up from the hospital and stayed over that night. He left for work the following morning and I was fine with taking care of the doggies and myself. Its just nice to have someone there when you first get home.

I think it will also depend on if you are having open or laparoscopic.

My doctor recommended no driving for a week and yes it was very helpful that ny husband was home . I had trouble getting out of bed , walking , and with him being there it helped alot. I had laparoscopic gb Jan 21 and I still till this day need help at times, make sure if you have an android download a free hourly chine so that you can eat and take meds etc on time.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
