From Lap Band...to...Gastric Sleeve...to Gastric Bypass.

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

My title gives you a hint about what my journey with weight loss surgery has been like so far. It's true, initially my plan was to get the Lap Band surgery. I was not 100% comfortable with the idea of having a foreign object inside me. I also did not like the idea of adjustments having to be made with the band as well as the possible complications. Due to that and some other reasons I opted for the Gastric Sleeve Surgery. It seemed ideal to me because I knew I was obese and this would allow me to lose the most weight. It did not seem as complex as this Gastric Bypass surgery (at the time this is how I felt) and I believed I was making the best possible decision for me in my weight loss journey.

Long story short, I went in for my Sleeve Gastrectomy on November 10, 2012. There were complications after this surgery and after several more smaller complications and surgeries or procedures to correct them here I am. On January 25, 2013 I had the Gastric Bypass or what is most similar to the Gastric Bypass. My surgeon told advised me that I could now receive the most support on these boards because from the Nutrition aspect especially, it was most similar to my case.

I just want to make clear that the complications that happened to me are rare. As a good friend of mine said, you're the reason why they make you all sign all those papers before surgery. I am just glad to be alive today, recovering and losing the weight!

I'd rather not get into all the details of all that went wrong. I want to focus on now...recovery. I'm here for the same reasons everyone else is...just to share in the celebration of the weight loss and to give and receive support in this journey.

I was on the Gastric Sleeve Boards prior to my surgery and I really found it very helpful. I'm sure I will have a similar good experience here. :)

Good Luck to all who are starting their journeys and Congrats to all who have completed or are in the middle of theirs.

Feel free to drop me a line.

All the Best,

Mari

Welcome! I was also thinking band then decided on the sleeve but my doc really recommended that that I have the by pass and I will on 2/28. Apparently I have some kind of twist to my stomach and a big hiatal hernia.

Glad you are doing much better!

You sound a little like me.. I had the Lapband placed aug 2011. I had it removed August 2012 with the hopes of converting to sleeve in same procedure. Once in surgery my spleen got cut and I had a ton on scar tissue built up from band. I almost died they said... So the band came out and no sleeve ..

Then just 2/4/13 the surgery to attempt the sleeve was done with on the consent form to convert to bypass if sleeve couldn't be done safely. They tried for an hour but got into bleeding issues and it couldn't be done therefore I did have the gastric bypass... I didn't ever consider this in the beginning because it seemed so drastic.... Been a long journey and a slow recovery but it's getting better.

I wish you the very best!

Amy

Nice to meet you Amy. It's unfortunate that we meet because of our circumstances but it's good to know we can relate to one another in this experience. I too, was in critical condition at one point and my surgeon wasn't sure if I would make it or not. Needless to say, it was a very scary experience to go through. We're blessed and lucky to be alive and now it's a matter of focusing on recovery.

I have faith that we will recover fully slowly but surely. :)

My Gastric Bypass surgery was on 1/25/13. Are you still on a liquid diet? How are you feeling?

Thanks for reaching out and it would be great to keep in touch.

All the best wishes for you.

Mari

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
