Getting ready for surgery and wondering about dumping mostly. I understand that sugar can cause it. But what about fruit that has natural sugar in it? Does that trigger it for you? And what about the Protein Shakes we are supposed to drink? I'm sure they have sugar. Does Peanut Butter do it too? Please let me know what you have found surprising that you dump on and also maybe what has surprised you that you can eat and not dump. Thanks!!!!!

no sugar added froyo :(

milk, regular yogurts...thank goodness not cheeses!

and of course any other things with refined sugar added that totals over 10g per serving.

My docs office told me specifically NOT to drink the shakes they make you do for pre-op after surgery cuz they will make you dump....

The only thing I've dumped off of was "rice a roni"(sp) I had two spoonfuls and it made me so sick....but so far I've been able to tolerate everything...I think my tummy is made of steel or something

Remember not everyone dumps! I was completely prepared for it mentally Pre-op, but post op I have not found anything that makes me do it. I do notice if I eat something I shouldn't with lots of sugar I feel tired and "off", but I don't get physically sick. I sometimes wish I did dump though because of the self control factor!

It really depends and no, not everyone dumps.

Libra_Lisa, I also have a steel stomach. lol I can't do rice either. It makes me feel losey.

I can eat fruit and dairy with no problems but not premade shakes. Again, losey. I have only got the dumping sensation once, actually Sunday night. For dinner I pushed it, I mixed some Honey Bunches of Oats into my greek yogurt for something different. I got sick but no barfing. Thank God!! I learned a good lesson that I needed!

Fat makes me dump along with sugar/carbs. More than a table spoon of Peanut Butter gets me sick - my 5year post op brother can't even look at Peanut Butter without dumping. I just dumped on Breakfast sausage because it was so greasy. Same goes for some chilis because of the fat. Though cheese is just fine with my stomach, but more than 4oz of milk and I'm sick

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
