Caring for children after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I am a newbie with a March 22 surgery date. My question is for those that have had surgery already and have children or care for children. I am a Nanny and take care of a 25 lb 2 year old and a 16 lb 7 month old. I took two weeks off for the surgery plus a weekend. My surgeon was a bit evasive about weight restrictions and pretty much said that I cannot really do any damage. I was just wondering how people have dealt with picking up their kiddos and caring for them...

I had my surgery on 1/24/2013 and I have a 20 month old who is about 24lbs and my doctor just said no heavy lifting 30+ for 4-6 weeks. There was no way I was in any shape to take her of her the first week my sister had to keep for me. After oh about 10 days it got A LOT easier I was just sore but still could do everything for her I would still get ran down pretty fast but I just pushed through it and by 2 weeks out I felt some what normal. Hope this helps!!

I babysit as well. The first day I babysat which was 8 days post op I went to the er for extreme pain due to lifting the baby (7 month old) but I did have open surgery so take that into consideration. I would not do any heavy lifting early on.

Oh good that you felt pretty normal after two weeks. That is how long I took off. I bet it was hard to be away from your little one for so long. How are you feeling now?

I'm ok now. Having open surgery sucks. The baby had whacked me in the stomach with her bottle and caused a stitch to open on that day. The lesson I learned was to allow your body to heal cuz we as women try to be superheroes and do it all.

Great question I have a 15 month old, and wondering the same thing. Glad I have the hubby at night and mom close durning the day. For help I tend to push my limits all the time.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
