Need some opinions on handling an upcoming party.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys...

Need some good, honest advice, especially from those post-oppers with a little more post-op time under their belt. On Saturday, I will be celebrating my brother's 30th birthday with a surprise party. Obviously I can't drink; I'm 4 weeks out. There will be food served. I was going to have a chicken sandwhich, but take off the bread and everything else, and only eat the chicken. The chicken is good Protein, but it's breaded and most likely fried....(think chicken cutlet-like). Should I eat before going to the party, or should I try and eat 3 bites of chicken? Would this be considered foolish at 4 weeks post-op?

Don't do it...don't eat the chicken. Bring something you can eat...an appetizer...hummus...soup...somrthing low fat, non-fried and tasty. You will be happier then if the food gets stuck and makes you sick.

i agree, bring a shake or some hummus, bc if you ate the chicken and it dont agree there goes your happiness for the party. Who wants to feel sick at a party!

When I'm nervous about a situation like the one you're in I always eat before I go. Then it's easier for me to resist the temptation of the food there and if people try to get you to "just try a bite!" you can truly be honest and say, "I am still so full from my last meal!"

Also- I would be careful the first time you eat something that was fried. I have had a homemade oven French fry and been fine. Had a fry from a local deli that my fiancé got a sandwich at (thankfully he brought it home so I was home for this) and I got so sick! I thought I would be fine since I had a "fry" before. :/ (I know some people are fine with deep fried foods).

Good luck & have fun! :)

I'm not too far along post op but now when I have somewhere to go that I'm going to be at for a while, I bring a Greek yogurt with me. Perhaps you could cook a dish to bring to the party, like a chicken chili.

I would def stay away from anything fried or breaded and its processed chicken if its the kind I'm thinking of that's the stuff you must avoid so I agree bring something you know you can eat from home chili is good and a good source of Protein so maybe make a pot of it and bring to the party

I had the same problem. So I ate before going just in case I felt sick I could get it all out my system and not be embarrassed. So I would recommend just drinking while you are there

I agree with you all. My family says I'm crazy and should just go and enjoy myself b/c I can only eat 3 bites anyway...but to me, eating something fried at a month out seems like cheating lol

I wouldn't take crackers. ...take something with Protein. ..small cheese slices or cold cuts, I.e. ham and turkey cut in small wedges...like an inch at the edge. Laughing cow light cheese...and the chili idea was great. Eating Soup made me feel normal.

I just remember the party isnt about food anymore and enjoy watching others eat while I sip my Water. A cheese tray is a great idea though. Today I have a birthday party and I am making a 3 layer cake with rice crispy treats layer and two huge and decadent pastas. If I can do this, you can survive!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
