Post op weight gain

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know much about post op weight gain? I am 9 months out and barely losing. I had an open hernia repair done 2 days ago. I couldn't hardly eat at all for a couple days. Yesterday I got to eat just a little. I got on the scales today and I've gained 8 flipping pounds! I am so depressed, I can't hardly see straight! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Good chance it is Water weight. They had you on iv fluids while in the hospital. I am 7 months post op and my weight loss has slowed way down.

I was up 10 pounds after my surgery. It took me a week to get it off. Don't panic. :-)

I'm only 4 months out and I've basically stopped losing. I'm freaking out. I eat way less than i used to so I'm not sure why I'm not losing.

I heard on another forum that eating the minimum required to required calories daily, whether by Protein shakes/and-or food, is how the weight comes off faster...... Exercise adds even more.....

Your body being in starvation mode=holding on to all food taken in as fat stores, until you get your body to recognize that it is being fed regularly again.....

I am 2 years post op and I gained 20lbs back. I got myself back on track and lost 11lbs in 3 weeks. It gets harder and you have to work harder so you don't gain. Sometimes the body goes into shock and will cause a stall in weight loss, but DO NOT get discouraged because it will come off if you work hard!

kmiller... music is right. This weight gain is from surgery. I had an ablation done and gained 8. It took 6 days for the iv stuff to flush out of my system and then I started losing. It is a freak out moment but you got this. Just keep working the program.

I gained 3 pounds last week :( not sure what happened- was doing great and then I gain! I think I will have to shake it up a little with my diet to start losing again. Wasn't able to get much cardio in this week either. Not worried- I know I will start losing again- just frustrated!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
