Recommended Posts

Have mixed feelings. So excited yet nervous anybody can share any experiences good or bad with the gastric bypass. I'm only 4 days away from my surgery. ;)

Congrats on ya date:

You will be fine... I had some pain after surgery and the week after I had an infection which Dr. Choi said could happen but I was put on meds and it cleared it.

I have ups and downs, with the diets and my new pouch, but like everyone else has said you have to take it day by day....

Dr. Choi has me on puree's now and some things are not agreeing with my new pouch but I am trying to do best with what i have like yogurts, Jello, apple sauce, carnation essentials Protein shake...

This is the only part of the surgery that is bothering me is my new pouch and getting my new pouch to work with me...

this is a life changing transition....I went from eating fried chicken collard greens mac and cheese, to pernil and rice and Beans to eating baby foods, yogurts, Jello and mash potatoes...(yes I kinda drooled when I said what I use to eat...(sorry lol)

now I take a few sips or a tbsp of something and I am full....(If it agrees with me)

All I can say is, my prayers are with you, and I am glad we found this forum...I just joined and I hear both sides good and bad and I get great advice which is good for me because now I don't feel so alone:)

I heard about this app when I went to my pre-op class Monday and glad I did. So far I've found a lot of info that will help me thru my journey and I know this will not be an easy path but with the help of family and friends and of course you guys on this app I will be fine. Thanks for the good wishes and I hope your journey gets better as well. I have one more concern. How long before I can go back to work approximately??

They did not give me any limits about work, they just want to make sure I walked at least 30-40 mins a day...

when you go in ask Dr.Choi just to be sure..

Ill ask her because in my job they are okay if I take from 2-4 weeks off however I work in an office and its mostly sitting down so that's my main concern. But if the doctor tells me to take about 4 weeks off I will do it to make sure that when I get back to work ill be in a better shape. :)

Sounds like a plan...:)

Since I work from home, and in front of the computer she wanted me to make sure I was active even at home,,,,meaning I have to get up and walk to avoid blood clots...

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
