A stricture 2 weeks out?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had a stricture?

I knew that with the band to bypass procedure there was a higher risk of ending up with a stricture, but I also figured that I would beat the odds. This morning I woke up and cold liquids aren't going through without pain. I can do warm liquids very, very slowly, but not nearly what I need to stay hydrated and avoid a trip back to the hospital. It has taken me about 2 hours to drink half a cup of hot chamomile tea.

I called the doctor this morning and the nurse said that it is probably a stricture. She said this is the earliest she has seen one post-op, as my surgery was only 15 days ago, but that it is possible if I am a fast healer.

I am supposed to go to the ER at around 3pm for IV fluids and have them contact my gastroenterologist and bypass surgeon for an emergency consult. I don't scare that easily, but I can't help but be worried about already having issues with this surgery.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Could you help me to understand what to expect if it is a stricture?

Well, I had one. My situation was a little different. I had an intestine twist with a staple. It started on day four. They said the same thing to me that it was too early for a stricture and the ER Dr kept thinking I over did it on Thanksgiving. AH NO!

Well, I had one. I am too a fast healer (which is a blessing). They did a lot of GI testing on me and when they figured it out, they had to go back in. I was scared to death but I was sooo sick. Nothing would stay down. But I will say this, the minute the surgery was over I felt a lot better.

Prayers and Hugs!! You will get through this!!!

I too had a kink/twist in my small intestine causing a blockage. Nothing would stay down; I was SO sick. It was found during the swallow test. 2 days after surgery, I had emergency surgery to correct it and felt so so so so much better. It was a very difficult time for me emotionally and physically, but I'm good now. Better to get it over with now. Good lick!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
