Extreme thrist

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else experienced this, I'm at the official 6 month mark and I'm down a whooping 108 pounds. I'm working out every day, eating my Protein as adjusted per daily need and hydrating accordingly to the climate (I'm in Afghanistan, mild days frigid nights) however I have this extreme thirst... I'm always thirsty... More so now than before and I've been working in the Middle East for the past 6 years so I'm very accustomed to the temps.

I didn't have diabetes beforehand however I do check my fsbs every day just to keep track and I do weekly urine dips just to make sure I'm nor throwing ketones out or anything too funky. My Dr is 12k miles away, though luckily I am a medical professional however this is not my field if expertise.

Anyone else having the same issue?

I'm 2 weeks post-op and have extreme thirst. I can't seem to quench it no matter how many little sips I take. I think the problem for me is I just want to gulp down my Water so bad, but know that's not possible =/

Are you getting at least 64 oz of Water in a day? Are the temps hot in Afghanistan? Even if you are adjusted to the temps there, you have had a major surgery and need to make sure you are getting plenty to drink. Congrats on your weight loss!!

I'm like you. I count the minutes after eating and have it down to the second as to when I can start drinking again. I'm also a no sugar popsickle fan. Nothing I drink feels cold enough so the serious coldness of the popsickles helps a lot. You may want to try that. Just a thought.

ps I don't know how easy it is to get popsickles so I hope you can find them.

I get really thirsty as well. I hate not being able to drink for 30min after I eat but if I even take a sip before then my stomach hurts horribly! Sometimes I even have to wait more than 30min.

However, I have found that if I eat a little bit of no sugar added canned fruit after my Protein it helps a lot.

I am addicted to my Water bottle now. One night about 2 weeks post op I had a tablespoon of Peanut Butter for dinner... Good gravy waiting 30 minutes for Water was rough!

Lol snow! I can't even imagine waiting to drink after peanut butter! Thanks for the post, it made my night! :)

Actually I don't have a problem drinking fluids as soon as 10 minutes after I eat, well small swishes of Fluid anyways. Being over here I am in constant contact with my team back home so they know about my routine. Seems I'm the first one of their patients to return to an active combat zone, even if I'm not military I'm still an armed NATO civilian.

My main concern is that I'll drink roughly 6 liters or a little less than 2 gallons a day and I'll still be thirsty... In the summer I've been know to drink as many as 8-10 liters here so it's not that uncommon as I'm very used to the harsh climate here... But in the winter as it is not its down right frigid so it's just odd that I'm this thirsty.

Speedy,

I don't think you will have to worry about dehydration. 6 to 10 liters a day is awesome. My doc said no drinking liquids 30 mins before and after eating so that your pouch gets full of just food. Drinking right afterwards can cause some of the food to flush out of the pouch, according to my doc. He said staying away from liquids while eating will help you feel full longer. Just passing on tidbits from the the doc.

Sometimes after I eat it is awhile before I can drink anything because I am just too full to fit it in.

What kind of Water are you drinking? Is it distilled, filtered, or spring? There is a difference, especially for post op bypass. You definitely do not want to drink distilled. Filtered isn't that good either. The best thing is spring water. If you're drinking distilled/purified water, that may be the problem.

Do you think you could have dry mouth? I recently discovered that was why I was thirsty all the time, even right after I drank Water. My doc told me that a lot of the meds I am on-- protonix, zyxal, synthroid- cause dry mouth. I have had good results with biotene.

I too have dry mouth and I hate it. My doctor told me to suck on SF candy when needed. It helps. Also, I have found that drinking sf lemonade helps too. Let me know if this helps?

Afghanistan, wow did you have surgery in The States or there? Congrats on your weight loss, have you tried low calorie Gatorade or switching your tooth paste to something that helps with dry mouth? Just be careful with dehydration but try Gatorade or something with extra electrolytes that you can have sugar free, which medical field is your expertise ? I hope this helps...

I just saw this thread today. I'm 3 weeks post op and can't stay hydrated either. I'm certain it has something to do with some of the meds I'm taking for blood pressure. As my blood pressure goes down I'm hoping I can come off the meds. Are you taking anything that my cause dehydration?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
