I had to respond to this for one reason only: People tend to not see the bigger picture as with medicare or any insurance. Insurances companies are waking up to the fact that they are going to pay more in the long run for things dealing with obesity (I hate that word I would rather be one of the four F's fat' date=' fluffy, or full figured) than they are paying for the surgery. Me myself I have went from 3 pills for blood pressure to 2 and working that to 1. 2 pills and 2 insulin shots for diabetes to 0 on both. as of next week will not need anything for insomnia had been breaking my ambien in half to pill cutting it into 3rds. every 3 months I would spend almost 300 on just scripts now 50 at the most. And on the part of your friend stating that she is paying for your surgery forgive me if I sound a little angry about this comment because as a working american who has held a job since I was 17 and am now 51 I have paid more in taxes than my surgery cost and then some so please use me if you have to the next time someone says to you that because medicare is paying that their tax dollars is paying for your "elective surgery" tell them that no you are pretty sure your friend sheri's tax dollars are paying to save my life.[/quote']

Amen, sister...it's the mentality that medicare is an " entitlement". I'm on disabilty, and one of the first things my sister asked me was if medicare was covering my surgery....no, it was our primary insurance, but as if that's anyones business! Would people rather pay for years of chronic health issues due to obesity...it's a money SAVER in the long run. Arrrrggghh

Here is a good one. When they discovered my band had slipped and had to come out and we would move on to RNY, I informed my supervisor I would have to have more surgery for weight loss. She looks at me and says "I don't know why you have lost enought already". So I put in my time to be off to have the band out which she approved. So when the approval for RNY came down at the end of August, I informed her the same day, put in my time for tomorrow until 9/25. Realize I'm using my time that I have on the books. Guess what, she didn't approve it and I have to have FMLA papers filled out. Totally sucks, more work for me and more work for the doctor's office. Really think it is because she really believes I don't need the surgery. She also needs the surgery, I look smaller than she does and I'm 60 lbs over.

I don't know where anyone thinks medicare is an "entitlement", I've worked my rear off since I was 16 and I am still working at 71. I pay into social security, draw social security which medicare is the benefit of. Now, I honestly think people get medicare and medicaid confused. medicaid is a state funded health insurance for people who are usually on welfare, which some of those cases medicaid would be an entitlement because they abuse the system. I would say this is my opinion, but actually it is a fact.

PS. Medicare is my primary and yes they are covering mine, and they will cover lapband. But will not cover the sleeve. RNY was just approved through the first if this year.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
