Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Anyone else have Steak Out? I've been living off of them. I work long hours so I don't have time to cook most of the time, and I can call and order it on my way home and they deliver it shortly after I get home. Since I'm on my SSS Pre-op diet, I had to find places with good salads. Steak out's ham chef salad.. mmmm.. I only wish they put boiled egg in it. Would be 100% perfect!

I will have to think more about what to get for fiance after the surgery. Right now he works 3-11, and I'm in bed by time he gets home anyway.. but the day of my surgery he officially gets a promotion and will be on the same hours as me.. 8-5. Woohoo. But, that means he'll expect me to feed him. Frankly, he could use it.. for the past year or so, he's eating like a teenager, which is is NOT anymore.. and his metabolism is trying to tell him, but he's ignoring it.. Since I'm in bed when he comes home, he keeps Cookies, crackers, cheese and mt. dew (mmm my beloved mt. dew) for his daily food. Eats boxes of cookies or donuts for dinner.. Snacks on crackers and chunks of cheese. He's getting to be squishy (hehe), and I don't eat those kinds of things for my meals and I'm this much overweight.. where is the justice..

laura - guys definitely have it over us when it comes to the weight thing. I know it isn't all guys, as there are a few that are on this website. But in general. It has been my experience that the food-gender thing just sucks! It isn't fair at all. But it is what we have.

Hugs and good luck. We are being banded on the same day. Do this for you!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

I am sobbing as I type this...

I am

DENIED!

due to the lack of documentation of a "rigorous" wt loss program of at least 6 mo duration over the past 2 years.

My coordinator is really nice & helpful... I told her straight up that I've done it all and that I'd basically given up on paying for this program or that just to fail again... and that, ironically, the band has been my first glimmer of hope in ages... but now my "lack" of "trying" (I TRY EVERY DAY!) is the cause of my denial.

I have 1 appeal available w/in 6 months...

so I guess it's off to the pcp for a "rigorous" program.

I am soooooooooooooo upset!

Michelle....I was denied at first, too. But I went to my pcp Doctor for six months, once a month to be weighed and "talked to" about my weight. He recorded dumb things that I've heard over and over. They approved me and that six months went by very quickly. I know you are disappointed right now....but, keep you chin up...you will get this done..you deserve it.

Also, did you make a list of all the diet things you've done in the past??

Lauraj23,

Where do you live? I dont think we have one here in CO. It sounds good though. After your surgery your finance can have the Soup and you get the juice! Your right where is the justice! But -- it is worth it! He will stay "squishy" and we will have Buns of steel! Hooray!

Dont give up!! Do the appeal, go on different web pages of diets you have used and exaggerate if you have too. List everything! Tell them how your joints ache...... back hurts...... keep trying! Dont give up. Start a thread if there isn't one for appeals, I bet you could get a lot of great ideas there.

Hello friends!!!!!!!!!

I've spent the better part of my morning on the phone with waterworks, city inspector, title company, county appraisers, Former owners of my house........ short version... Former Owner is meeting dbf at the house later today to show him exactly where our lines run.....

I have to admit, last night I cheated... I had a couple pieces of thin crust pizza. Dbf tried to stop me, but all it did was tick me off more...... THE upside is that I STOPPED AT TWO...... the damage, I am up 1.5 lbs... I have yet to eat/drink anything today... I need to go get a Protein Shake because I am hungry......I think somewhere I'm punishing myself..... who knows.. and get this .......... the pizza was not even that good.

I forget who posted the idea about the hospital workout room... THAT IS AN AWESOME idea! Thanks!

Panda: LOOK at you!!! So cute already

GREAT JOB EVERYONE! Heading to my moms for showers tonight.......

I'll check in later.

Michelle- don't give up hope keep trying I know being denied sucks but it will make being approved so much sweeter. Also, keep a food journal during those six months and submit it too.

Tracy- Don't beat yourself up, you are doing amazing considering your circumstances. I would be on a rooftop with a box of ho-hos!! Just start again today.

As for me I am feeling great, down six pounds since surgery on 4/5 and 10 pounds before that so 16lbs all together woohoo! I can see my eyes again the puffyness has gone away.

Hang in there everyone it gets soooo good!

Thanks for the encouragement... I've spent the last hour going through our Quicken reports printing out everything I can think of... Curves memberships, pool memberships, Low Carb Friends market purchases, Nutrisystem, etc... I have to print it all out and go into town to fax it to her. She said that she has 7 days to give the reviewing doc add'l info w/out it being considered an "appeal"... after that... it's back to basics for 6 months (which I *think* Jan/Feb/March may apply, so it'd just be another 3). OF COURSE I won't give up & will do whatever they tell me... it's just so F!@#ing unfair & illogical. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Hi Everyone! I'm Jen and I just found out my surgery date, it's April 27th!!! Yah!!! I haven't been reading the post's here but I will so I can catch up and be part of the April bandsters! I live near Seattle, Washington and I'm self pay. Dr Earl Fox is my surgeon. I had my gallbladder removed in 2003 and I'm hoping my recovery will be the same (although I think the port pain area will be the worst part to deal with). I plan on taking Friday - Tuesday off work - vacation as I've only told two people I work with. Good luck to everyone and for everyone that already had surgery I hope your recovery is going well!!!

PS... I have to do 10 days of clear/sugar free liquid diet before Surgery and not sure how long after surgery. I think probably 3 more weeks, then mushies? I haven't had my appiontment w/the patient advocate who will review all that with me!

I hope to talk to you guys more soon!!

Hi everyone! I'm in band-land! Banded April 5th and this is my first post since banding. All went every well. Doc's record time (before me) was 1 hour and 5 min and my surgery was only 58 minutes! YAY! Stayed overnight in the hospital - routine, but I would REALLY recommend staying if you have the option. It's great to have the extra rest and fluids, because you really do not have an appreciation for how easy it is to down liquids until you are restricted.

I have 5 incisions - 4 are about 1/2 in long and 1 that is about 1 1/2 inches - only that one is consistently sore. It is right next to my belly button and goes to the left. My pants also sit right there so it's been really difficult to wear clothes! I have my pants hanging low....looks great I"m sure! lol!

I've managed to get in about 49 ounces of Clear Liquids each day starting 2 days after surgery. Clear liquids = Water, broth, sugar free popsicle, no sugar added juice, and I've had 2 ounces of Protein Shakes a few times (Matrix 5.0).

I gained about 3 pounds after the surgery from all the fluids they pump in, but weighing this morning, I'm down 3 pounds since day of surgery weigh in, so I've lost 6 pounds in 4 days. I thought the weight would kind of come off a lot faster, but I know this is just the very beginning.

My first post-op appt in this Friday. I hope to graduate to full liquids on Friday!!! First fill is at 6 weeks.

How is everyone else doing? Are all the April bandsters, even those who were banded this month still posting to this thread?

Take care all! Good luck with those being banded....and speedy recoveries to those already banded!

Bandedme (FINALLY!!!! 4/5/07)

Michelle, dont give up hon, do EVERYTHING in your powers to get a re submission. I feel so sorry for you, the frustration must be awful. Just keep going with it, heck even get past diet leaders to write letter on your behalf!

Laura, ooooo man that steak just sounds too good to be true, Ooo I wish I could be eating steak right now with salad, with a glass of red wine...Grrrrroooaaaannnn......do you want to swap for cottage chese??

Kat, thanks for the recipie ideas, I'll give it a try.

Terry I looked at your journel today, wow you have loads of information, I hope you dont mind, as you suggested it to Pam to look at for dietry ideas.

Tracy, gee you have really been through the mill with the drains problem, I would be tearing my hair out by now, 2 slices of pizza, Id have eaten the whole thing, and more by now if I'd have been in your situation, so youve done amazingly well!

Jen, welcome to the group! The time will fly by this month, and the 27th will be here before you know it!!

Take care all,

Hugs Sara

Bandme Welcome to the April group :clap2: !! Hey your surgery went really well! I reckon the pain on one of the areas you are describing is where they've put the port? Mine still aches a bit and I was banded on the 2nd, but every day it gets easier :biggrin1:

Hugs Sara

I can not believe they denied you with your comorbitities!

KEEP FIGHTING!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
