Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters

Recommended Posts

Yesterday my entire bottom lip broke out in 8 cold sores. It is so sore! A nurse told me that is the first sign on dehydration. But. I have been drinking so much water! How can this be.

Also, this morning I noticed on the back my right arm is a very dark black and very dark purple bruise!!! It is the size of a grapefruit! Right in the middle of it is what looks like a thumb print. But it does not hurt. I am wondering if maybe when I was out, someone tried to scoot me onto another table? Does anyone have a clue what this might be??? Thanks for all your help

Margi- I'm SO glad I'm not alone, this means I didn't completely mess myself up. Well maybe not, but it seems like an odd coincidence we both did something horrible to ourselves unknowingly!!

About gum, my dietician said NO! She said if you accidentally swallow gum it can get lodged in the opening, and require an operation to remove it. I'm not a gum chewer, so it's not a big deal to me.. but that seems like a high risk for someone who wants to chew! wasabubblebutt mentioned somewhere else she still chews it though.

Since you're having problems with #2 too, hopefully that's just our problem. Whew. I feel so much better now!!

Hello all

my stomach pain is almost completely gone, but I have pain in my left arm which could be gas but I was talking to my mom who is a nurse and she seems to think it could have something to do with they way they moved me off the operating table and how they had me strapped down. So I broke down and took some more tylnol and back to the heating pad. I wish this pain would go away because it is worse than anything.

As for the gum, I was told no too, I miss it

As for the gas, omg! I am glad it is starting to settle down because it has been out of control. And chicken broth seems to make everything run through me, so for the last 3 days i've been in the bathroom with #2 every time i took a drink. So I don't know what is worse going non stop to the point you can't leave your house or not going at all.

Still so worth it!

Jennifur- I'm the opposite with BM's. I feel like I have to, then nothing happens, and I strain. It's not even every day either. I was thinking of taking some sort of laxative to get it going, possibly help the pain I'm having. My gas seems to be bad at night when I'm laying in bed, my stomach makes sooo many noises then.

OH, so I did forget to mention

It was almost 80 here today, in upstate NY and that means BBQ season started. My entire street had a community BBQ and I sent my kids and cried for the first time because I didn't have the strength to be around my absolute favorite foods and not be able to eat. For the first time, I was really missing food and sad that I could not be strong enough to hang with everyone.

My best friend said she was in a hard place and I told her it was my choice to do this, I was just not strong enough to go be around 20+ people eating grilled chicken and hamburgers, and guess what, they are all doing it again at another neighbors tomorrow.

This is when food has become my comfort, and I miss it. I am tired and that pain is so bad at times. I knew the weekend was going to be so hard. It won't be so bad when I can even make a mushie dish to take with me so I can eat something with everyone, but not everyone knows about this so I don't want everyone pressing me to eat.

Is that totally crazy that I am sitting home while they are all out eating and drinking?

lauraj23-my stomach was making those noises the morning after I got home and soon after that it started. chicken broth seemed to make me have to run even more. Today was the first day I didn't have those noises all the time. I have been sleeping in my bed with a pillow under my knees or naps on the couch with my feet up on the arm with no pillows and that seems to really help .

That's interesting, I'm opposite of that too!! I posted a thread about food sympathy.. my family is like walking on eggshells about eating around me.. and it does NOT bother me. I mentioned there, while they eat the yummy foods, I'm fantasizing about what my body will be in a year. I drank Water while they ate. It's good you took yourself out of the situation.. but I would think of a way to deal with it (gradually), because everyone eats.. and everywhere you go, people are eating!! I'm not sure what kind of advice to give on that. I'm not dying of hunger yet, so it hasn't been a big burden to me. Is there nothing there you can have? Soup?

 Jennifur :)

(((Hugs))) Jennifur, I can so relate to what you experienced today, and it was wise not to go, even though you felt isolated. In a few weeks time once you start on hard food, it wont be so bad, Im looking forward to experiencing eating again, were in a weird situation at the moment, and we cant eat normal food yet, and were unsure whats safe and whats not, if that makes sence.

Keep your chin up xx it will get better soon, and hopefully the pain in your arm will go real son.

That is the funny thing, I am not hungry so as far as that goes, I knew I couldn't eat, it was just an emotional thing right now I think. I have been around food constantly and until tonight with my absolute favorite thing I was ok, I even went to my step moms pizza shop and it didn't even bother me, and I love her sauce.

I am queen of the summer BBQ and party and that is hard. Most of my neighbors know, just not all of them, the one's who would spread my business all over town.

Thanks Sara- I do know it was best to not be in that situation.

I had the heating pad on my arm and the tylnol really helped, so it might be muscle stuff.

thanks all for the encouragement

Laura,

I asked my doctor today about taking a laxative and he recommended I just drink prune juice. I was really concerned that I haven't had a BM since last Friday. Again like you i feel like i need to go, i strain and then all i do is pass gas. it's really frustrating. i'll be on prune juice for a couple of days and see what happens...

I had a problem with Constipation before surgery. My doc recommended Fiber Sure twice a day and it works!! I hadn't been taking it after surgery cause I wasn't having any problem getting rid of the barium. But after that... nuttin. I called the nurse and she said to let her know if I hadn't gone by Monday. I started putting the Fiber Sure into my yogurt and sure enough after a day, it worked. Aren't we thrilled with life's little pleasures??

Jennifur - I'm 99% sure the pain you're feeling in your left shoulder is a result of gas...I know that sounds weird and I can't explain why it's referred up to your shoulder. Mine was in the front right at the top of my left shoulder and it sometimes felt like I was being stabbed with a screwdriver....a very sharp localized pain. But MAN, did it hurt! Are you still feeling 'pregnant' with the gas? Then that's probably what it is. Just do what you can to get rid of that gas. I'm sorry you're having a hard time today but I PROMISE you it will get so much better when you move to mushies. I never thought mashed potatoes or refried Beans could taste so damn good. Like Teach said...suddenly we're very content with very small things. Just have patience. I know it's hard.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
