I am a 27 year old female standing 5'3" at 320+lbs. What questions do I need to ask my doctor about the RNY? I have struggled with my weight for over 17years and I and at the breaking point.

HI! What I would do would be to try to educate yourself first. Is there anywhere you can go to attend a seminar on weight loss surgery? A lot of hospitals have them on a regular basis. Once you see if this is really an option for you, check with your insurance to see if they cover it. Some do and some don't. Plus each one has a different set of criteria you have to meet pre-op. You will be able to get this information and take it to speak with your dr. From your stats, you meet the basic qualifications.

Once you are armed with this information, I would then talk with your PCP. I will warn you, some are OK with it others will freak out and try to scare you out of it. This way you are educated enough to have a thorough conversation.

I agree with what worm said. The best thing to do is attend a seminar which will get the ol grey matter a turnin. Then start writting down all the questions you have about WLS and the risk vs reward. This forum is a wealth of knowledge but nothing can take the place of your physician. Make sure you write down what you want to ask. many peope dont and thus forget or get nervous. If you have the list in front of you its easy to just go down the line. I am guessing by the star of life that your in EMS. Use your knowledge to your benefit. It may throw off a nurse or dr when you start asking about things like risk for DVT or what kind of anti platelet agregrate are you going to have me on or do you have a problem not using succinocolyn because i dont want the added risk of malignant hyperthermia. Use your knowledge to better advocate for yourself!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
