Montage 87 Posted January 16, 2013 I travel quite a bit for my work, have any of you had any problems with flying (in planes) long or short distances? How long after surgery should you wait? Should I get approval to fly from my Doc?
BBdoodle 483 Posted January 16, 2013 I will be flying to florida in April and that is my one year annivarsary for RNY surgery. I don't see a problem with flying but I would check with your surgeon.
bakawaka 108 Posted January 16, 2013 I flew 10 days post op with a surgical drain. Had no problems. But I did have to buy bottled Water after airport security to stay hydrated during the flight. The drain was not a problem going through security, I simply informed them upfront about the drain.
Wendilou 180 Posted January 16, 2013 I can't wait to be able to fly and not have to worry about my fat touching the person next to me! Last time I flew I had to buy the extra seat because I was afraid they would deny me my seat for being too big. And it will be nice not to have to use a seatbelt extender and put the tray table all the way down without hitting my belly! lol. I think without having to worry about those embarrassing things flying might not be so bad.

I think without having to worry about those embarrassing things flying might not be so bad. I am right there with you. I had to fly cross country in November and I started freaking out about the long distance and who was sitting next to me as early as October. While my work paid for my initial ticket I had to fork out a lot of money to buy an extra seat. Actually I beleive this incident really sealed the deal with me getting the surgery. In a way I really hated the whole experience but in another way it did help me come to the realization that I needed help and this was it. I will fly again and when I do I will enjoy everything you mentioned and more
dstollery 290 Posted January 16, 2013 i fly daily and only 6 months post op and have been flying for the past few months. Of course nothing replaces the advice of your physician, most pt's fly without issues within a few weeks of surgery.

I fly to darkest Africa, and would hate to get an infection. But also I fly short trips within South Africa. I'm just wondering if I'll have issues with a short hour flight 3weeks after surgery?
