Terrible struggle during preop testing!

Recommended Posts

I feel like time has completely stopped. I have made my appointments for the psych, nut class, and surgeon, but in the meantime I'm struggling to diet and change my eating habits. I feel like a failure already.

You're not a failure. It's a struggle for all of is. If it was easy we wouldn't need the surgery. It's going to take a long time to make the changes, but it's good that you're starting now. Keep it up and don't get discouraged. Stay focused on the long term goal.

You will do fine! We're always hardest on ourselves. I know that when I was faced with losing weight prior to the surgery I only tackled 1,maybe 2 things at a time. Such as cutting out coffee or soda (replace it with more Water if you don't drink much or something else healthy), try using a smaller plate, cutting out fast food or all fried foods and eat more chicken/fish, incorporate or increase veggies, salads and fruits. Also, try to get excited about finding yummy sugar-free and/or fat-free foods like puddings, jellos, Popsicles, etc. There are a lot of good things to eat, I find most at Target and Walmart.

Again, these are just some tips you may find helpful, and please don't put too much pressure on yourself-we have all struggled or we wouldn't be in this forum. If there's anything we can do to help, let us know :)

Wow! What a great group of people. I have successfully cut out red meat, fried foods, processed foods, and drastically cut down on sugar. Still struggling to get in exercise though.

I have the same feelings you do. I am still in pre-op stages and I have an epic struggle each day to try and stay on my diet. And the closer I get to actually getting a surgery date, the slower time seems to move. I feel like I am losing my mind waiting. I am thankful I have work 'cause that keeps my mind off it for a time. I just keep checking in here and reading all I can about the process. I've also been reading www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.com. (I know--weird name) She has a blog about what she eats post-op and I'm learning a lot about food from it. Hang in there--we can get through this together!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
