I haven't got a surgery date yet but I am anxiously awaiting my final appointments. I have been overweight since I was 5 years old and was first diagnosed with obesity when I was 12. Now I'm 22 and have tried everything to lose weight naturally. In August I was diagnosed with hypertension and was told I would be a good candidate for surgery. My BMI is over 50, which totally freaks me out. Luckily my husband is Active Duty Army and our insurance will cover everything. The process for going through an Army hospital is a bit different and shorter than for the civilian world. The process included an initial consult, 4 nutrition appointments, 3 psych, 2 visits with a wellness center to determine exercise, a surgery orientation and the appointment to set the date. I have four appointments left before I can meet with the surgeon again. I will be done with those by the end of the week. I'm happy about my decision to complete the process but nervous about the surgery itself. I have never had any surgeries or even broken a bone. I'm hoping I'm making the right decision!

Welcome! We all have made the same decision for many different reasons. It is life changing. Lots of good people here.

Welcome! I am at the same stage as you are--waiting for final appointments (which is driving me absolutely nuts BTW). I am 38 years old, however, and I wish I had done this yeas ago.

Hi welcome too! I am still in the process of my surgery as well. I have one more visit with the nutritionist and then blood work and then surgeon visit and hopefully to pick a date. Hopefully by April!

Hi and Welcome!!! This is the best place for advice and support. Everyone here is really kind and they are very helpful.

I, like you, never had surgery before so I was scared crapless! I got through it and it is not that bad. I can say that it was much easier knowing what will happend and what to expect. I felt like an expert LOL.

Feel free to ask any questions and good luck to you!! Time will fly by!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
