2 hrs ago, I had an 'episode'.

Recommended Posts

I've been struggling w/pain from gas etc since surgery. Taking percocet and tonight at 10 p.m. took liquid tylenol. At 12:20 just two hours ago, I had a burp. Not like any burp - it immediately made me feel horribly nauseous. I started to panic, I started to spit up just spit; no bile. Then came the spasms as if I was vommiting. Luckily I was able to stop it. I sat in the recliner for the last two hours, hardly moving. Put a cold cloth on my face and tried to relax. Just got up for the potty, and some more burps.

I am horrified. This is really turning out to be a disaster for me. I don't feel pain, just some discomfort. How worried should I be about a slip? Should I call the Dr. in the a.m.?

I think we worry about slips more than we should. What I mean is, we obsess about them. I think about a slip everyday. You are doing the right thing by calling your Dr.

About a week post surgery, I vomited quite badly, interestly enough it was after taking medication as well. When I had my fill they ex-ray'd me and no slip! Just try to stay calm and breath. Your body is recovering from trauma, just let it be the boss. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I think you are ok for now, as you have no pain, and gas can be a real bummer right after surgery.

Go ahead and call your DR. tomorrow for your questions and let them instruct you for what your dealing with, we sometimes get the heaves from a spasm but be sure to let your Dr. know.

BTW, percoset makes me terribly sick to my tummy, especially as we cant have any food to dilute the irritation on our tummy.

That sounds like a regular bout of nausea following by dry heaves. As someone else mentioned, percocet can cause nausea. Especially if you take it on an empty stomach or mix it with other drugs. I had very extreme nausea for the first 48 hours after surgery and experienced the same thing you just described. However, I think your nausea is probably caused by the oxycodone in the percocet and mine was from the anesthesia.

When you feel the nausea start up again, drink ice Water in small sips, keep an ice pack handy to put on the back of your neck, and work on controlling your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nose and exhale through your mouth.

See if your doctor can either give you a script for different pain killer or maybe a script to combat the nausea. I know how absolutely horrible you feel, but hang in there.

You mentioned the liquid Tylenol. Is that working for you? It did nothing for me, but I found that the liquid Motrin did work, so I switched to that. The Motrin worked well enough that I was able to get off the darvocet (which contains codeine), and my stomach has been a lot more steady since I quit the codeine. I'm still burping like crazy, though.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
