Is this slippage??

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Unfortunately, my second posting to this site is in the Complications section.....ugh.

How do you know if your band has slipped? Is it possible that coughing from a chest cold would cause slippage?

Here's what I'm experiencing:

A weird sensation when I swallow - almost like I have something stuck to the OUTSIDE of my throat. According to the anatomy pics I've looked at, it feels like it's happening above my esophagus. I have no problems with liquids but solid food (chicken, halibut) even when chewed to death, stays down but doesn't feel that great. Borderline sliming.

I called my doc in Mexico (Ortiz/Martinez) and I'm supposed to let them know if symptoms worsen, i.e. - I start vomiting and/or not tolerating liquids.

Yeah, ok - I'm trying not to panic.

Anybody else have this? Any feedback?

Thanks!

Karen

Coughing as a cause of slippage came up just the other day. One of my surgeon's patients had to have her band removed, due to slippage, that was attributed to coughing. I can't say whether that was true or not, and I guess it is possible that "slippage" looks better on a record than "incorrect placement", so who knows - but that's the story I got.

The symptoms I've always heard associated with slippage are more along the times of extreme inability to keep food down, or no restriction at all. As well as acid reflux, etc.

I also read of another bandster who had a lot of sinus drainage which was causing her to feel "stuck". Try pineapple juice, it always works for me. Ive heard it be called the Human Drano, on here before.

I was banded Tuesday evening and I'm having the same sensation in my throat that you describe. I get chest colds a lot due to various work related exposures. I felt that "gunky" chest feeling soon after I got home from Mexico. I thought the intubation and oxygen had probably irritated my lungs and sure enough I've had to fight hard not to cough for the past 2 days. I've tried to keep the coughing as "gentle" as possible in order to avoid slippage, but being a new bandster I really have no idea if coughing can cause the band to slip????? As for the coated feeling in the throat...I'll try the pineapple juice.< /p>

Coughing by itself is very unlikely to cause slippage. What's much more likely is that the soft tissues in the pouch and esophagus are irritated and causing increased restriction and discomfort. That's VERY possible. So take it very easy--go on liquids for a few days until the illness passes--and then see where you are.

Good luck and I hope you feel better!

I don't think you have slipped. The nurse at my doc's office says you will KNOW if you have a slip as you won't be able to tolerate any food. You will also have some intense pain. Let us know! Hang in there.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
